Initially located outside the city walls, the church was surrounded by open countryside, giving it a serene and contemplative atmosphere.

By the early 1500s, the church had become so integral to the town that one of the city gates was named Porta di Gesù in its honor. In 1507, the church underwent significant renovations and expansion, thanks to the generous funding from the governors of Alcamo, Federico Enriquez and his wife Anna I Cabrera. This period marked the completion of the architectural masterpiece that we see today. Further modifications and restorations were carried out between 1762 and 1776 under the direction of Father Lorenzo from Casteltermini, adding to the church's grandeur.

In 1920, the church was designated as an autonomous parish by the Bishop of Mazara, reflecting its growing importance within the community. Subsequent renovations in 1960, 1984, and 1997 have ensured the preservation and enhancement of this historical site, including the restoration of frescoes, the Via Crucis, and the installation of modern lighting systems.

Architectural Marvels and Artworks

Inside, the church is a treasure trove of artistic masterpieces. One of the highlights is the fresco on the vault depicting the Assumption, created by Leopoldo Messina. This artwork replaced an earlier fresco by Carlo Righetti, which portrayed the Immaculate Conception in the style of Murillo. Messina also painted a fresco of Saint Francis contemplating Jerusalem in 1944, replacing another work by Righetti that depicted Duns Scotus, a theologian of the Immaculate Conception.

The church houses several other remarkable frescoes by Carlo Righetti, dating back to 1901. These include scenes from the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, such as his departure for the Holy Land, sending friars to preach the Gospel in distant lands, and his encounter with the Sultan of Damietta.

Sculptures and Relics

Among the many sculptures within the church, the small marble statue of Saint John the Baptist by Giuliano Mancino stands out. This early 16th-century piece, along with two marble medallions depicting the Annunciation and Saint Gabriel, showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of the Gagini school.

The church also features a marble holy water font from the 16th century, a marble statue of Saint Mary of Jesus, likely created by Bartolomeo Berrettaro and Giuliano Mancino, and a wooden statue of Saint Francis of Assisi by Giovanni Piscitello from 1912.

One of the most striking artworks is the painting of the Madonna with Saint Philip Neri, Saint Lucy, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria by Tommaso Pollaci, dating back to 1788. Another notable piece is the Madonna in Throne between Saint Francis and Saint Clare, also attributed to Pollaci.

Historical and Religious Significance

It houses the marble Eucharistic tabernacle by Baldassare Massa from 1557, adorned with gold by Giovan Leonardo Bagolino. Another important relic is the painting of the Madonna of Grace, also known as the Greek Madonna, attributed to the Palermo painter Pietro Ruzzolone. Commissioned by Federico Enriquez and Anna I Cabrera in 1515, this painting represents the Madonna of Grace with the Child Jesus, Saint Francis of Assisi, and Saint Benedict, along with three pages and three maidens in prayer.

The church also preserves the remains of Blessed Arcangelo from Piacenza, which were transferred here in 1961 from the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Calatafimi. His tombstone, depicting him holding the Book of Rules and Observance, can be seen on a side wall.
