Initially, the community worshipped in a modest church behind the old St. Agatha Chapel. However, after a devastating fire in the early 18th century, the need for a new church became evident. The current structure was finally realized after the legal equality of all religious communities was established, allowing for its grand construction.

Designed by the architect Teunis Wittenberg, the church is a testament to the classicist style, seamlessly blending into the street's facade. Its design features a vaulted nave flanked by two flat-roofed aisles, creating a harmonious and balanced interior space. In 1851, the church underwent a significant expansion with the addition of the choir area and a suggestive transept, further enhancing its architectural allure.

Artistic Treasures Within

According to legend, a young girl from Nijkerk, on her way to join a convent in Amersfoort, discarded the statue into a canal, deeming it too plain. However, another girl discovered it after a dream, and the statue soon became a revered pilgrimage site. The church boasts a wealth of artistic and religious artifacts. Ten statues of saints, created by sculptor Frans Stracké between 1863 and 1865, line the walls. These sculptures include depictions of Saint Theodor, born in Amersfoort in 1499 and martyred in 1572, as well as Saints Willibrord and Boniface, known for spreading Christianity in Friesland. The main and side altars, crafted in 1852, along with the stunning stained glass windows from 1939 to 1941, add to the church's visual splendor, illustrating the Evangelists and the sacraments.

The Enchanting Organ

The church's organ, built in 1819 by Gideon Thomas Bätz, has its own intriguing history. Originally intended for the Remonstrant Church in Utrecht, it found its home in Amersfoort when the initial buyer couldn't fulfill the payment. The organ's original design included a Rückpositiv, which was not implemented in Amersfoort. However, during a restoration from 1982 to 1983 by Jos H. Vermeulen, an empty Rückpositiv case was added to enhance its grandeur, based on Bätz's original drawings.

This mechanical instrument, with 17 registers across two manuals, is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. Its sound fills the church with a rich, resonant tone, captivating all who hear it.
