The current structure, however, owes its existence to the visionary efforts of Johann Jakob Willibald Ruez and Christian Jäger, who constructed it between 1775 and 1777. Funded by the affluent city pastor and theologian Johann Nepomuk von Kolb, the church was modeled after the collegiate church in Bad Buchau.

While the church’s exterior echoes the classical style with its broad, rounded windows and a classical console frieze, it also retains elements of baroque grandeur. The convexly curved west facade, featuring the older central tower, is a striking example of this blend, showcasing monumental baroque elements.

Architectural Marvels Inside

Step inside St. Verena, and you are greeted by a three-nave gallery hall with a broad central nave and a recessed choir. The interior design, while inspired by the Bad Buchau church, leans more towards the late baroque style, creating a harmonious blend of classical and baroque aesthetics. The expansive central nave, emphasized by the concave curvature of the entablature, seamlessly transitions into the choir, offering a visual feast for the eyes.

Artistic Treasures and Decorations

The church is adorned with exquisite stucco work in the Louis-seize style, crafted by Jakob Willibald Ruez. The ceiling painting in the nave, a masterpiece by Andreas Brugger from 1777, captivates visitors with its intricate depictions of King Solomon, New Testament figures, and angels, surrounded by portraits of the princely Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzach family.

The high altar, designed by Franz Xaver Feuchtmayer the Younger, is a stunning piece that fits perfectly into the choir’s apse, complete with a mensa and tabernacle styled after the Ark of the Covenant. The altar niche houses the figure of the incredulous Thomas, while the flanking statues of Saints Verena and Conrad are the works of Johann Friedrich Vollmar.

The altar mensa, featuring the burning bush and the Lamb of God, was created around 1780 by Konrad Hegenauer. Johannes Ruez contributed figures for the wall niche and side altars, while Franz Anton Kählin sculpted the statues of the twelve apostles, Mary, Joseph, and Sebastian between 1740 and 1746.

Among the church’s prized possessions are a crucifix from 1742 and an Ecce Homo representation by Johannes Ruez. Additionally, a group of figures depicting God the Father and Christ from the late 15th century and a colorful marble epitaph for Helena von Waldburg, dating back to 1515, are cherished relics from the predecessor building.

The Majestic Organ and Bells

Music enthusiasts will appreciate the church’s magnificent organ, a 2004 creation by the Giengen Organ Manufactory Gebr. Link, housed in a case from 1784 by Joseph Höß. With 36 registers across three manuals and a pedal, the organ is a modern masterpiece that continues to fill the church with melodious tunes.

The bell tower, with its square base above the west portal, houses a historic set of four bronze bells, each resonating with the rich history of St. Verena Church.
