Over the years, the museum's collection grew significantly, particularly during the tenure of José María Collado, who directed the institution from 1958 to 1981. Under his leadership, the museum acquired a late 19th-century palace on Meléndez Valdés Street, which became its new home in 1979 and was officially inaugurated in 1981. The museum continued to expand its collection through acquisitions, loans, and donations, thanks in part to the efforts of Francisco Pedraja Muñoz, who served as director from 1981 to 1996.

In response to the ever-growing collection, the Provincial Council acquired additional adjacent buildings, allowing for a significant expansion of the museum's exhibition space. The current entrance, located on Duque de San Germán Street, features a magnificent imperial staircase and connects seamlessly with the original museum building. The museum now boasts over 2,000 square meters of exhibition space, providing ample room to showcase its extensive collection.
