The History of Villa Zanders

Constructed between 1873 and 1874, Villa Zanders was originally built for Maria Zanders, the widow of the early-deceased paper manufacturer Carl Richard Zanders. The villa was designed by the renowned Cologne architect Hermann Otto Pflaume, who was known for his busy and successful career. The villa was initially situated amidst a small park, remnants of which can still be seen today. Maria Zanders lived in the villa for 30 years until her death in 1904.

Following a brief period of vacancy, Maria's son Hans Zanders moved into the villa. After his death in 1915, his widow resided there until 1932. The property then transitioned into the possession of the old Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis and later, through a land swap, to the city of Bergisch Gladbach. For a long time, the villa served as the administrative seat for various authorities. By the 1970s, the villa had fallen into disrepair, facing the threat of demolition. However, its historical value was recognized, and on June 23, 1982, Villa Zanders was listed as a historical monument in Bergisch Gladbach. The building underwent extensive renovations from 1985 to 1992, preserving its architectural integrity and historical significance.

Architectural Marvel

Villa Zanders is a three-story brick building adorned with natural stone elements in the French Renaissance style. The structure is characterized by its risalit formation, vertical emphasis, and the motif of the triumphal arch. The mansard roof, animated by dormers, adds to the building's majestic appearance. Although the roof cornice and chimney structures are no longer intact, the villa's architectural beauty remains undiminished.

Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders

Since its renovation, Villa Zanders has been transformed into a municipal art museum, initially known as the Städtische Galerie Villa Zanders and later renamed Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders in 2014. The museum plays a pivotal role in the cultural landscape of Bergisch Gladbach and the surrounding region, focusing on art created from and with paper, a tribute to the villa's historical connection to the paper industry.

The museum showcases a diverse range of art across three floors. The ground floor, steeped in historical ambiance, primarily features late Romantic paintings from the Düsseldorf School of Painting, dating back to Maria Zanders' era. Notable artists include Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, Carl Ludwig Fahrbach, and Johann Wilhelm Lindlar, who hailed from Bergisch Gladbach.
