Kreuzkirche

Kreuzkirche Bretten

Kreuzkirche

The Kreuzkirche, or Church of the Cross, is a historic evangelical church nestled in the charming town of Bretten in the Karlsruhe district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. This architectural gem, with its rich history and stunning artistic features, stands as a testament to the resilience and faith of the local community through centuries of trials and triumphs.

The History of Kreuzkirche

The story of the Kreuzkirche begins in 1687 when the Lutheran congregation decided to erect a new place of worship on a plot of land freed up after a fire had consumed two buildings. This location, west of the Steinhaus (now the Amtshaus), was to be the site of their spiritual haven. However, the church's early years were marred by tragedy. In 1689, during the War of the Palatine Succession, the newly built church was reduced to ashes, along with much of Bretten, in a devastating fire.

Undeterred, the resilient congregation rebuilt their church, and by 1702, the Kreuzkirche was consecrated anew. Initially, the church was more modest than what we see today. It wasn't until the 1740s that the church began to take on its more elaborate appearance, with the addition of a tower, painted ceilings, and galleries.

In 1821, a significant shift occurred when the Lutherans and the Reformed congregations united to form the Evangelical Church in Baden. Consequently, most services were moved to the larger Stiftskirche, which also served the town's Catholic population until 1938. The Kreuzkirche, though not deconsecrated, was used less frequently for services.

The 20th century saw the Kreuzkirche undergo major renovations. In 1957, the church was extensively restored, including the refurbishment of its paintings and the installation of new bells in the tower. Another significant renovation took place in 1987, which saw the installation of a new floor and heating system. The baroque organ, a masterpiece in its own right, was meticulously restored and reconstructed in 1994.

Architectural and Artistic Highlights

One of the most striking features of the Kreuzkirche is its rich historical decorations. The ceiling painting in the choir, created in 1741 by Johann Bartholomäus Brandmeyer from Bruchsal, is a stunning example of illusionistic art, giving the impression of a much higher ceiling than actually exists. This artistic trickery adds a sense of grandeur and expansiveness to the space.

The three-sided gallery, or empore, is adorned with biblical scenes painted by Johann Jakob Geitlinger in 1746. These vibrant depictions bring the stories of the Bible to life, adding to the spiritual ambiance of the church. The pulpit's balustrade also features original paintings that have been carefully preserved.

The baroque organ, constructed by Philipp Heinrich Hasenmeyer between 1747 and 1749, is another highlight of the Kreuzkirche. It is the only surviving instrument by Hasenmeyer and retains much of its original components, including the magnificent casing, wooden pipes, and part of the manual wind chest. The organ's vertical casing elements are inwardly inclined, enhancing the perspective effect of the ceiling painting. The organ was skillfully restored by the Alsatian workshop Rémy Mahler in 1994, with missing parts reconstructed in a style true to the original. The organ features 13 registers on a manual work and pedal, with mechanical actions.

Inscriptions and Memorials

Embedded in the north wall of the nave are inscription stones dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries. These stones serve as silent witnesses to the church's tumultuous history, commemorating various events and individuals who have been part of the Kreuzkirche's story.
