Barnum Museum

Barnum Museum Bridgeport

Barnum Museum

In the heart of Bridgeport, Connecticut, stands a treasure trove of history and curiosity: The Barnum Museum. This architectural gem, located at 820 Main Street, offers visitors a captivating journey through the life and legacy of one of America's most iconic showmen, P.T. Barnum, as well as the rich history of Bridgeport itself.

The Building’s Architectural Marvel

The Barnum Museum is housed in a historic building that is a masterpiece of architectural design. Constructed in 1893, the structure is a blend of Byzantine and Romanesque styles, crafted from stone and terra cotta. The building was originally commissioned by P.T. Barnum to serve as a home for the Bridgeport Scientific Society and the Fairfield County Historical Society. The exterior is adorned with intricate friezes created by Henri Plasschaert, depicting significant moments in American history, such as the Native American era, the Early Settler period, the Maritime age, the Civil War, and the Industrial Revolution. Interspersed among these panels are busts of notable figures, including George Washington and Christopher Columbus, adding to the building's grandeur.

A Glimpse into History

Before his death, P.T. Barnum bequeathed $100,000 for the establishment of this building, which was initially known as The Barnum Institute of Science and History. It opened its doors on February 18, 1893, serving as a resource library and lecture hall. Over the years, the building has seen numerous transformations. During the Great Depression, the societies that originally occupied the building faced financial difficulties, leading to the City of Bridgeport taking ownership in 1933. In 1936, the city opened the Barnum Museum, and after several periods of closure and renovation, the museum as we know it today was fully restored and reopened in June 1989.

Exploring the Exhibits

Visitors to the Barnum Museum are treated to a diverse array of exhibits that celebrate the life of P.T. Barnum and the history of Bridgeport. One of the highlights is the recreation of Barnum's personal library from his Iranistan estate, offering a glimpse into the private life of this legendary showman. The museum also features a fascinating collection of artifacts from the 19th century, including items related to Tom Thumb, one of Barnum's most famous acts. Among the most intriguing exhibits is a 2,500-year-old Egyptian mummy, verified as authentic by Quinnipiac University personnel.

The P.T. Barnum Digital Collection

In 2016, the Barnum Museum partnered with the Bridgeport History Center and received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to digitize a portion of their collections. The P.T. Barnum Digital Collection, hosted on the Connecticut Digital Archive, includes over 1,200 items ranging from letters and ledgers to clothing worn by Barnum, Lavinia Warren, and Tom Thumb. This digital archive also features unique items such as a slice of fruitcake from Warren and Thumb's 1863 wedding and furniture from Barnum's Iranistan home.

A National Historic Landmark

In recognition of its historical significance, the Barnum Museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2023. This designation highlights the museum's importance in preserving the legacy of P.T. Barnum and its role in American cultural history.
