Saint Peter in chains Roman Catholic Church in Daugavpils

The Saint Peter in chains Roman Catholic Church in Daugavpils, known locally as Daugavpils Svētā Pētera ķēdēs Romas katoļu baznīca, stands as a beacon of spiritual and architectural significance in the heart of Daugavpils, Latvia. This magnificent structure, with its rich history and classical design, offers visitors a glimpse into the past while serving as a vibrant place of worship in the present.

The Historical Tapestry of Saint Peter in chains Roman Catholic Church

The foundation stone of Saint Peter in chains Roman Catholic Church was laid in 1845, and by 1848, the construction was completed. The church was consecrated on June 29, 1848, by the parish priest Obermiller. Designed by architect A. Štrauberts, the church was originally built in the classical style, funded by the generous donations of the faithful. However, the church we see today has undergone significant transformations. Between 1924 and 1934, under the guidance of parish priest Ādams Vizulis, the church was rebuilt and expanded, leaving little of the original structure intact.

In 1974, a plan to demolish the church was approved, but the devout parishioners managed to save it. They sent letters to Pope Paul VI, who, during an audience with the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Nikolai Podgorny, persuaded him to preserve the church. This act of faith and determination ensured that the Saint Peter in chains Roman Catholic Church remains the oldest surviving church in Daugavpils, celebrating its 160th anniversary in 2008.

Architectural Grandeur

The architecture of Saint Peter in chains Roman Catholic Church is a marvel to behold. The church was envisioned as a smaller-scale replica of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. The building is an elongated rectangular structure with a semi-circular apse and a prominently projecting portico at the entrance. The church is a three-nave building with a vestibule at the entrance, above which is an organ loft housing an eight-register organ.

The baroque silhouette of the church is crowned by a dome tower, or lantern, whose columns echo the design of the dome's cylinder. The white dome of the church is supported by four double pillars. The forecourt is framed by symmetrical colonnades, reminiscent of Michelangelo's design for St. Peter's Square in Vatican City.
