It was Jonkheer Astère Vercruysse de Solart who, in the late 19th century, undertook the ambitious project of converting the farm into a summer residence for his family. The castle's interiors are adorned with the Vercruysse family crest, a striking azure shield featuring a silver cogwheel and 21 golden crosses, accompanied by the motto Sub Cruce Labor (Labor Under the Cross).

Inside, visitors can admire bas-relief figures from Greek and Roman times adorning the walls, while the dining room boasts a wooden mantelpiece crafted from old church furniture from the church of Ruien. Above the fireplace, a copper cross and the family crest dated 1922 catch the eye. Gaverkasteel During Wartime

During the tumultuous years of World War I, Gaverkasteel was requisitioned by German officers, who transported much of its valuable furniture to Germany. Following the war, in 1921, Astère Vercruysse passed away, and his heirs commissioned the renowned Kortrijk firm Kunstwerkstede Gebroeders De Coene N.V. to restore the castle's interior.

By the 1930s, the castle had changed hands and became the center of a clandestine operation involving alcohol distillation and smuggling, leading to the arrest of its owner and associates in 1932. The castle eventually returned to the market and was acquired by the municipality of Deerlijk in 1956, along with adjacent lands.

The Transformation into Gaverdomein

In 1957, the castle gardens were transformed into a leisure area known as Het Gaverkasteel, expanding in 1962 to include tennis courts. The 1970s saw further development with the addition of a sports hall and an indoor swimming pool. By 1991, the area was officially named Gaverdomein, encompassing a vast recreational space bordered by Vercruysse de Solartstraat, Schragenstraat, Stationsstraat, and the Ring (N36).

Today, the old coach house and stables have been repurposed into a restaurant and brasserie, where visitors can still see the iron numerals marking the year 1772 on the walls. The castle itself now houses the Social House and the Public Centre for Social Welfare (OCMW).
