Santi Siro e Materno

Santi Siro e Materno Desio

Santi Siro e Materno

The Santi Siro e Materno, known locally as the Basilica di San Siro e Materno, is a magnificent piece of architectural and historical heritage nestled in the heart of Desio, Italy. This basilica is not just a place of worship but a testament to centuries of rich history, artistic grandeur, and cultural significance.

The Historical Significance of Santi Siro e Materno

The origins of Santi Siro e Materno date back to the 7th century, attributed to the efforts of Archbishop Giovanni the Good of Milan. This ancient foundation has evolved through the centuries, with the current structure primarily taking shape between the 17th and 18th centuries. The original church was part of a larger network of ecclesiastical buildings in the region, serving as a focal point for various smaller churches and chapels in the surrounding areas.

In the aftermath of the Council of Trent, the church of Desio became the head of a vicariate, encompassing numerous parishes. The construction of the current basilica commenced in 1652, under the guidance of architect Camillo Ciniselli, and was completed in 1744. This period saw the basilica's consecration by Cardinal Giuseppe Pozzobonelli, marking a significant milestone in its history.

Over the centuries, the basilica has undergone several modifications to accommodate the growing population and changing needs of the community. Notably, in the 19th century, the church was expanded, the transept was added, and the iconic dome was constructed. These enhancements culminated in the reconsecration of the basilica in 1895 by Cardinal Archbishop Andrea Carlo Ferrari.

Architectural Marvels of Santi Siro e Materno

The exterior of Santi Siro e Materno is a striking example of classical architectural design. The façade is adorned with Ionic pilasters and divided into two levels by a prominent cornice. The lower level features three portals, with the central one flanked by columns and topped with a pediment. The upper level boasts a large window with a curvilinear pediment, surmounted by a triangular gable, creating a harmonious and balanced aesthetic.

The interior of the basilica is equally impressive, with a single nave flanked by side chapels and covered by a barrel vault. The intersection of the nave and transept is marked by the majestic dome, which is adorned with a fresco depicting the Glory of Saints Siro and Materno. This stunning artwork is just one of the many treasures housed within the basilica.

Among the notable pieces are the baroque high altar, designed by architect Giuseppe Merlo and crafted by Nava and Antignani in 1744, and several significant paintings. These include the Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and Jesus and the Children by Mauro Conconi, completed in the mid-19th century, and a 1480 canvas depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints by Stefano De Fedeli.

The Bell Tower and Its Legacy

The bell tower of Santi Siro e Materno is a historical landmark in its own right, with origins dating back to the early 15th century. The current structure was rebuilt after the original tower was destroyed by Milanese Ghibellines in an attempt to oust the Guelfs who had taken refuge within. The base of the ancient tower was later incorporated into the church during the 16th century to form the baptistery.

The bell tower houses a renowned set of bells, cast by the Varese-based founder Felice Bizzozero in 1843. These bells are celebrated for their exceptional tonal quality and are considered among the finest in the world. The largest bell, known as the Campanone, was replaced in 2010 due to a crack, with the new bell crafted by the Allanconi Bell Foundry in Bolzone di Ripalta Cremasca. The bells can be rung both manually and electrically, and their melodious chimes are a cherished aspect of Desio's cultural heritage.

The Santi Siro e Materno bell ringers group, established in 1799, continues to uphold the tradition of bell ringing, contributing to the preservation of this unique cultural practice. In recognition of their enduring efforts, the group was awarded the highest civic honor, the Corona Turrita, in 2021.
