The western part belonged to the Diocese of Speyer, lending the church its name, while the eastern part was under the Diocese of Constance.

In 1347, the church became part of the Dominican convent in Pforzheim, a testament to its ecclesiastical importance despite its distance from the convent. This relationship underscores the church's historical significance, as it possibly took over rights from the Hirsau Monastery, which had provided economic foundations for the Pforzheim convent.

The Architectural Marvels

The church we admire today was reconstructed in the late 15th century in a striking Gothic style. Although the exact dates of its construction and consecration remain a mystery, its architectural features speak volumes. The renovation might have been initiated by Friedrich von Nippenburg, a prominent figure linked to the Speyer Cathedral, suggesting a blend of regional influence in its design.

The late Gothic church features a rectangular nave, measuring approximately 14.75 by 8.4 meters, crowned with a wooden beam ceiling. The masonry, composed of local red and colored sandstone, adds a rustic charm to its robust structure. Its west-facing main entrance and additional southern access reflect its historical connection to the surrounding settlements.

Its varied uses over the centuries included serving as a barn, storage space, and even a place to dry laundry. In 1656, the church came under the ownership of the Württemberg state, and by the end of the 19th century, it was entrusted to the civil community of Ditzingen.

In the 20th century, the church experienced a revival of sorts. With the growing Catholic population in Ditzingen, it briefly served as a place of worship for the Catholic community until the construction of a new church. During the Nazi regime, it was transformed into a memorial for World War I casualties, a project led by sculptor Fritz von Graevenitz. Although the memorial was later removed, the church's historical significance remained intact.
