Einbecker Brewery

Einbecker Brewery Einbeck

Einbecker Brewery

In the picturesque town of Einbeck in Lower Saxony, Germany, lies a gem of brewing history and tradition - the Einbecker Brewery. Known locally as Einbecker Brauhaus, this historic brewery has been a cornerstone of the town since the Middle Ages, producing beer that has been cherished far and wide. With a history as rich and flavorful as the beers it produces, the Einbecker Brewery is a must-visit for any beer enthusiast or history buff.

A Storied Past

The origins of Einbecker Brewery date back to 1378, as documented by a sales record of Einbecker beer. However, the brewing tradition in Einbeck began even earlier, in 1240, when the town was granted city rights, including the right to brew beer. The beer brewed in Einbeck during the Middle Ages was a luxury item, known for its high quality and exported over long distances, even reaching as far as Italy. To ensure the beer's durability during these long journeys, it was brewed with a high original gravity, resulting in a strong, high-alcohol beer.

The Birthplace of Bockbier

Einbecker Brewery holds a special place in beer history as the birthplace of Bockbier. The story goes that in 1521, Martin Luther, during the Diet of Worms, was gifted a jug of Einbecker beer by Duke Eric. Luther reportedly declared, The best drink known to man is called Einbecker beer. This endorsement helped cement the beer's reputation. By the mid-16th century, even the Bavarian court was importing Einbecker beer. The term Bockbier itself is derived from the Bavarian pronunciation of Einbeck - Oanpock - which eventually evolved into Bock. Thus, Einbecker Brewery is credited with the creation of this beloved strong beer style.

Modernization and Expansion

In 1794, the brewing rights in Einbeck were consolidated, leading to the formation of a unified town brewery. This brewery merged with the newly established Einbecker Brewery Domeier & Boden in 1922, forming what we now know as Einbecker Brauhaus Aktiengesellschaft. Over the years, the brewery underwent several mergers and acquisitions, including a notable merger with Schultheiss-Brauerei AG and Dortmunder Union-Brauerei, forming Brau & Brunnen.

In 1997, a private investor group led by Ender & Partner Vermögensverwaltung AG acquired the majority shares from Brau & Brunnen AG. The brewery has since invested significantly in modern brewing and bottling technology, including a second bottling line and a new filtration system capable of processing up to 150 hectoliters of beer per hour. These investments ensure that Einbecker Brewery continues to produce beer of the highest quality while maintaining its rich traditions.

A Diverse Range of Beers

Einbecker Brewery offers a wide variety of beers, catering to diverse tastes. Some of their notable brews include Einbecker Brauherren Pils, Einbecker Dunkel, Einbecker Kellerbier, and the seasonal Einbecker Mai-Ur-Bock. The brewery also produces non-alcoholic options like Einbecker Brauherren Alkoholfrei and Einbecker Radler Alkoholfrei 0.0%. Additionally, they offer unique blends such as Einbecker Blutorange and the recently introduced Cora, a mix of cola and orange lemonade.

For those who enjoy trying different beer styles, Einbecker Brewery also produces a range of Bockbiers, including Einbecker Ur-Bock dunkel, Einbecker Ur-Bock hell, and the seasonal Einbecker Winter-Bock. Each beer is crafted with care, ensuring a delightful experience for the palate.
