In the aftermath of the war, efforts to rebuild the collection began in the city library. The former garrison school was eventually renovated, and on September 20, 1969, the Kleist Memorial and Research Center was officially opened. Over the years, the museum continued to evolve, and on November 14, 2018, the Brandenburg State Parliament established the public-law foundation Kleist-Museum, which took over from the previous sponsoring association on January 1, 2019.
