Kol Ami of Frederick

Kol Ami of Frederick Frederick

Kol Ami of Frederick

Located in the heart of Frederick, Maryland, Congregation Kol Ami is a vibrant and welcoming Reform Jewish community that offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity. Founded in 2003 by a group of eight dedicated families, Kol Ami has grown into a cornerstone of Jewish life in Frederick. With its commitment to inclusivity, spirituality, and social action, this congregation is a must-visit for anyone interested in experiencing the rich tapestry of Jewish culture and community spirit.

The Birth of a Community

Congregation Kol Ami was established on February 21, 2003, by eight visionary families who sought to create a Reform Jewish community in Frederick. The congregation initially held its services at the Unitarian-Universalist Congregation of Frederick church, located at 4880 Elmer Derr Road. From these humble beginnings, Kol Ami quickly grew in both size and spirit, becoming a beacon of Jewish life in the area.

A Home for Worship and Learning

In 2004, the congregation borrowed a Torah for use in worship, marking a significant milestone in its early development. The following year, Kol Ami took another major step forward by hiring Daniel Sikowitz, a trainee rabbi, who would later become the congregation's first official rabbi in 2007. Under Rabbi Sikowitz's leadership, Kol Ami began its religious school, providing Jewish education to children and adults alike. The congregation also joined the Union for Reform Judaism in 2005, further solidifying its place within the wider Jewish community.

Milestones and Celebrations

Kol Ami has celebrated numerous milestones over the years, each one a testament to the community's growth and resilience. In October 2007, a group of women at Kol Ami celebrated their b'not mitzvahs. These women, who were older than the traditional age for such a celebration, had never had the opportunity to participate in this important rite of passage. Their b'not mitzvahs were a poignant reminder of the congregation's commitment to inclusivity and lifelong learning.

A Torah with a Story

In 2008, Congregation Kol Ami acquired its first Torah scroll, a sacred text with a poignant history. Purchased for $20,000, this Torah was said to have been saved from the Holocaust in Lviv, Ukraine. Members of the congregation, some of whom are of Ukrainian descent, were deeply involved in writing the Torah, making it a truly communal effort. However, the story took a dramatic turn when an investigation by the Washington Post cast doubts on the authenticity of the Torah's provenance. The Torah had been sold to Kol Ami by Rabbi Menachem Youlus of the Save a Torah Foundation, an organization that claimed to rescue forgotten Torahs. Youlus was later convicted of fraud, but the experience only strengthened the congregation's resolve and unity.

Commitment to Social Action

Social action is a cornerstone of Congregation Kol Ami's mission. The congregation frequently participates in various community service projects, including supporting the Frederick food bank. This commitment to tikkun olam, or repairing the world, is evident in the congregation's ongoing efforts to make a positive impact on the broader community. Whether it's organizing food drives, participating in interfaith dialogues, or advocating for social justice, Kol Ami members are dedicated to living out the values of their faith.

A Welcoming Community

One of the most striking aspects of Congregation Kol Ami is its warm and welcoming atmosphere. Visitors are often struck by the sense of community and belonging that permeates every aspect of congregational life. Whether you're attending a Shabbat service, participating in a holiday celebration, or joining a study group, you'll find a community that is open, inclusive, and eager to welcome newcomers. Kol Ami prides itself on being a place where everyone, regardless of background or level of observance, can feel at home.

Looking to the Future

As Congregation Kol Ami looks to the future, it remains committed to its core values of inclusivity, spirituality, and social action. The congregation continues to grow and evolve, always striving to meet the needs of its members and the wider community. With a strong foundation built on tradition and a forward-thinking approach to Jewish life, Kol Ami is poised to continue its journey as a vibrant and dynamic community for years to come.

In conclusion, Congregation Kol Ami of Frederick is more than just a place of worship; it is a thriving community that embodies the best of Jewish life. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a cornerstone of the Frederick community, Kol Ami is a testament to the power of faith, community, and resilience. Whether you're a longtime resident or a visitor to Frederick, a visit to Kol Ami offers a unique and enriching experience that you won't soon forget.
