The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, known locally as Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, is the most important Catholic place of worship in Frosinone, Italy. This magnificent edifice stands proudly in the historic center of the city, in Piazza Santa Maria, inviting visitors to explore its rich history and architectural splendor.
The origins of the Cathedral date back to early Christian times. It was built on the remains of a temple dedicated to Mars, situated at the summit of the hill where the ancient acropolis of Frusino once stood. It is believed that the church served as the cathedral of an ancient diocese, which later merged with the Diocese of Veroli in the 8th century.
During the medieval period, the church was reconstructed in Romanesque style. However, it underwent significant modifications in the 18th century, drawing inspiration from the Basilica of Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome. The only remnants of the medieval structure are the Romanesque bell tower, featuring three orders of bifore windows.
The façade of the Cathedral is a sight to behold. It is divided into two sections by a cornice, with the lower part supported by six marble pilasters. The lower section features three portals, each crowned by a pediment. The upper section, aligned with the central nave, has a rectangular window. The façade is capped with a triangular pediment, adding to its grandeur.
On the right side of the church stands the Romanesque bell tower, dating back to the 1500s. The tower, adorned with an octagonal dome, has three orders of bifore windows supported by white marble columns. Standing at 62 meters high, it offers a commanding presence over Frosinone. Remarkably, the bell tower withstood the bombings of World War II, sustaining only minor damage to one of its large clocks.
The Cathedral's history is marked by resilience. On September 11, 1943, Frosinone was bombed, causing severe damage to the Cathedral and the surrounding piazza. The façade partially collapsed, and one of the naves was completely destroyed. The communal reservoir beside the Cathedral was also razed to the ground. Despite the devastation, the Cathedral was rebuilt in the post-war period, with contributions from emigrants of the Ciociaria region.
In 1965, the Cathedral became the co-cathedral of the Diocese of Veroli-Frosinone. Later, in 1987, it was elevated to the status of the Cathedral of the Diocese of Frosinone-Veroli-Ferentino.
The interior of the Cathedral is equally impressive, featuring three naves separated by pillars with Corinthian pilasters. Among the surviving artworks is a painting from 1641 by Sementi, a disciple of Guido Reni, depicting the Madonna with Saint Anne, Saint John the Baptist, and angels. This circular painting is a testament to the Cathedral's rich artistic heritage.
The Cathedral also houses contemporary artworks by renowned artists such as Gisberto Ceracchini, Domenico Purificato, Eliano Fantuzzi, Giovanni Colacicchi, Luigi Montanarini, and Manlio Sarra. These paintings narrate the life of the Virgin Mary and Christ, adding a modern touch to the ancient setting.
Flanking the high altar are bronze statues of Saints Pope Hormisdas and Pope Silverius, patrons of the city, further enriching the Cathedral's spiritual ambiance.
At the back of the Cathedral, on the cantoria, is the pipe organ built by the Pinchi company in 1957 and expanded in 2015. This electric transmission organ boasts 19 registers on two manuals and a pedal, offering a majestic sound that fills the sacred space during services and concerts.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta stands as a symbol of faith, resilience, and community for the people of Frosinone. Its history, marked by destruction and reconstruction, mirrors the enduring spirit of its congregation. Visitors to the Cathedral are not only treated to a visual feast of architectural and artistic beauty but are also invited to reflect on the deep historical and spiritual significance of this revered place of worship.
In conclusion, a visit to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is a journey through time, offering insights into the rich tapestry of Frosinone's religious and cultural heritage. Whether you are a history enthusiast, an art lover, or a spiritual seeker, the Cathedral promises an enriching and unforgettable experience.
