The Historical Evolution of the Belfry of Gembloux

Originally, the Belfry of Gembloux was the bell tower of the Saint-Sauveur Church, constructed in the 12th century on the foundations of a 10th-century edifice. This church was likely the main parish of Gembloux during its time. The town received its first communal charter of liberties in 1123, later confirmed by Godfrey III, Duke of Brabant, in 1187. To better serve the municipality's needs, the tower was raised multiple times, first in 1478 to house a clock and again in 1531 to serve as a watchtower. This gradual elevation of the church tower's role reflected its growing importance in the town's social and defense systems.

In 1678, a devastating fire ravaged Gembloux, leading to the establishment of a bell foundry for reconstruction efforts. The post-revolutionary period saw the closure of the Saint-Sauveur Church for worship, likely when the abbey buildings were sold as national assets. The abbey church was adopted as the parish church of Gembloux, under the name Saint-Guibert. In 1810, the dilapidated Saint-Sauveur Church was acquired by the municipality, and in 1825, its nave and choir were demolished. However, the bell tower was preserved, restored, and officially transformed into the Belfry of Gembloux.

The Architectural Journey

Since 1889, the belfry's walls have been covered with a brick veneer. In September 1905, a fire ravaged the upper part of the belfry. The lantern constructed in 1907 atop the tower had a different design from its predecessor, featuring a bulbous shape rather than a spire reaching for the sky. This lantern is crowned with a weather vane bearing the coat of arms of Gembloux. Despite significant damage over the years, restoration efforts have been ongoing, with the most recent works approved by the municipal council in 2017.

The Carillon of the Belfry

The Belfry of Gembloux is home to a remarkable carillon. Initially, the tower housed four traditional swinging bells, including a bourdon, since 1905. In 1962, an additional 47 bells were added, creating a full carillon. This instrument was entirely renovated in 2009, with the keyboard modernized to improve control over the bells. Today, the Belfry of Gembloux boasts one of the only two concert carillons in the province of Namur, making it a unique musical landmark.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site
