The ancestral Altleiningen Castle was left in ruins, prompting Count Philipp Ludwig von Leiningen-Westerburg-Rixingen to transform the old monastery courtyard of Lungefeld into a grand residence in 1698. This transformation marked the birth of the Unterhof Castle.

Tragedy struck when Count Philipp Ludwig fell at the Battle of Cassano in 1705, leaving no direct male heirs. Consequently, the estate was inherited by distant relatives, Christoph Christian and Georg II Carl Ludwig of the Leiningen-Westerburg-Schaumburg line. These two brothers took turns ruling and established their own family branches, residing in Grünstadt due to the destruction of their ancestral strongholds.

Architectural Marvels and Modern Transformation

The Leininger Unterhof is a splendid example of baroque architecture, with its façade facing Obergasse. The original east wing, stretching from south to north, remains intact. The main building, with its mansard roof and three stories, boasts seven window axes, exuding an air of grandeur. Adjacent to it is a younger, two-story classical structure with six window axes.
