The Historical Tapestry of Saint Mary Church

The story of Saint Mary Church begins long before the first stone was laid. The site was originally home to a Roman fort from 150 to 240 AD, a strategic location near the northernmost point of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes. This fort was eventually destroyed by the Alemanni, but its legacy lives on in the very ground where the church now stands.

In the 8th century, a Benedictine monastery was established here, marking the beginning of the site's religious significance. Fast forward to the late 12th century, when Bishop Otto of Eichstätt consecrated a larger church on this site, remnants of which can still be seen today in the lower levels of the church tower and a Romanesque window in the sacristy.

Architectural Marvels and Renovations

As Gunzenhausen grew, so too did the need for a larger place of worship. The current structure of Saint Mary Church began to take shape in the 15th century. The choir, constructed by Endres I. Embhardt of Kempten, was completed between 1448 and 1461, while the nave was finished by 1496. The church tower, a striking feature of the Gunzenhausen skyline, was also extended during this period.

The interior of the church underwent significant changes over the centuries, reflecting the shifting tides of religious and artistic tastes. In the late 16th century, galleries were added, and the church embraced the Reformation in 1528. The 18th century saw a Baroque makeover, complete with a grand gable wall on the west front and a lavish interior. However, in 1850, the church was transformed once again, this time embracing a Neo-Gothic style, which included the addition of new pews and the overpainting of earlier frescoes.

Exploring the Treasures Within

Inside Saint Mary Church, visitors are greeted by a blend of historical artifacts and artistic treasures. The high altar, redesigned in Neo-Gothic style in 1850, originally featured a painting of the Transfiguration of Christ by Johann David Fillisch. The church also houses a Baroque wooden crucifix by Giuseppe Volpini and a remarkable relief of a Christ’s head from the earlier church.

Among the most fascinating features is the fresco of Saint Christopher, dating back to 1498, which was rediscovered in 1954. The church also boasts a baroque walnut pulpit from 1707 and the grave of Knight Paul von Absberg from the late Gothic period, complete with a sculpted dog at his feet, affectionately known as Kiri, the church dog.

The Resonance of Bells and Music

Music and sound play a vital role in the life of Saint Mary Church. The main organ, crafted by Thomas Jann Orgelbau in 2006/2007, is a masterpiece with 47 registers across three manuals and a pedal. It stands proudly on the gallery above the entrance, offering a rich accompaniment to the church’s services and events.

The church also features a smaller choir organ, a one-manual positive built by G. F. Steinmeyer & Co. in 1954, which adds to the harmonious atmosphere during liturgical celebrations.

It is the main church of the Evangelical-Lutheran Deanery of Gunzenhausen, continuing to host services, community events, and even televised broadcasts, such as the one aired on February 12, 2012.
