The Historical Journey of St. Josef

The history of St. Josef is deeply intertwined with the religious and socio-economic transformations of Ilmenau. The town embraced Protestantism during the Reformation in the 16th century, leading to a significant decline in Catholic presence. However, the advent of industrialization in the 19th century brought a resurgence of Catholic families to Ilmenau. The first Catholic mass in modern times was celebrated on April 26, 1896, at the Gasthof zum Deutschen Kaiser, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the Catholic community.

In 1900, the Catholic student fraternity KTV Unitas was established, primarily consisting of members from the Thuringian Technical Institute, now the Technical University of Ilmenau. Despite being banned during the Nazi regime, the fraternity continued to exist clandestinely and was officially reestablished after the reunification of Germany.

The Catholic parish of Ilmenau was formally founded in 1901, and a mission house was constructed on Unterpörlitzer Straße, featuring a chapel dedicated to St. Joseph. This chapel served as the primary place of worship until it became too small for the growing congregation. The community faced numerous challenges during the Nazi era, with many Catholic associations being banned and community activities restricted. However, the end of World War II saw an influx of Catholic refugees, further increasing the number of parishioners.

In 1953, the Catholic Student Community (KSG) was founded, providing a platform for students to engage in religious and intellectual discussions. The KSG continues to be an active part of the parish, celebrating its patronal feast day around June 22 in honor of St. Thomas More.

The Architectural Marvel of St. Josef

St. Josef's current structure, completed in 1983, stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. Designed by Wolfgang Lukassek, the church's architecture is inspired by the symbolism of a tent, reflecting the idea of a wandering people seeking refuge. This design was particularly meaningful for Christians in the former East Germany, representing protection and sanctuary.

The church's unique design features six wooden supports, with a roof that opens towards the southeast, allowing natural light to illuminate the interior. An adjoining single-story annex connects the church to the former mission house, housing the sacristy, a group room, restrooms, and storage spaces.

Exploring the Interior of St. Josef

Inside St. Josef, visitors are greeted by a stunning combination of religious symbolism and artistic expression. The partially gilded cross above the altar is adorned with twelve tongues of fire, representing the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Additionally, the seven works of mercy are depicted, emphasizing the church's commitment to compassion and service.

The church's seating is divided into four sections, with no central aisle, creating an intimate and inclusive atmosphere. To the left of the altar, the tabernacle symbolizes fire, while the baptismal font on the opposite side represents water. These elements are complemented by the church's stained glass windows, designed by Christof Grüger, which transition in color from blue to red, symbolizing water and fire, respectively. The windows can also be interpreted as sun rays emanating from the cross, filling the space with warmth and light.

A Marian altar is situated to the left of the tabernacle, providing a serene space for prayer and contemplation. On the right side of the altar, a mobile ambo and a wooden statue of St. Joseph the Worker further enrich the spiritual ambiance of the church.

The Role of St. Josef in the Community

Throughout its history, St. Josef has been a cornerstone of the Ilmenau community. During the political upheavals of 1989, the church played an active role in the peaceful revolution, with Pastor Gerhard Sammet participating in roundtable discussions and organizing demonstrations. The parish house became a hub for various organizations, earning the nickname House of Democracy.

Today, St. Josef continues to serve a vibrant community of approximately 1,990 members, with around 1,330 residing in Ilmenau and its surrounding villages. The parish's territory roughly corresponds to the former district of Ilmenau, with Catholics making up about 3.3% of the regional population and 5.2% within the town itself.

In 2017, as part of a broader restructuring within the Diocese of Erfurt, the parish of Ilmenau was integrated into the larger parish of St. Elisabeth Arnstadt. This new parish encompasses an area stretching from Erfurt to the Rennsteig, reflecting the church's enduring presence and influence in the region.
