Independence Temple

Dominating the skyline of Independence, Missouri, the Independence Temple is a beacon of peace and a marvel of modern architecture. This iconic structure, dedicated to the pursuit of peace, stands as the focal point of the headquarters of the Community of Christ. Its unique design, spiritual significance, and welcoming atmosphere make it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling through the region.

A Vision of Peace

The story of the Independence Temple begins with a revelation presented at the 1984 World Conference by the church's prophet-president, Wallace B. Smith. This revelation was the culmination of over 150 years of instructions shared by prior prophet-presidents recognized by the Community of Christ. Groundbreaking for the temple took place on April 6, 1990, and the completed structure was dedicated on April 17, 1994.

An Architectural Marvel

Designed by architect Gyo Obata, the Independence Temple's design evokes the spiral shell of a nautilus, with a stainless steel spire that rises 300 feet (91 meters) into the sky. This striking feature not only makes the temple a visual landmark but also symbolizes the church's journey towards peace and enlightenment. Visitors enter the sanctuary through an etched glass archway depicting the Sacred Grove, where Joseph Smith had his initial revelatory experience. This leads to a gently ascending worshipper's path of textured stone, spiraling around the periphery and adorned with artworks and a fountain symbolizing the living water of John 4:10.

A Place of Worship and Reflection

The main sanctuary of the temple can seat approximately 1,600 people and houses a magnificent Casavant pipe organ with 60 stops, 102 ranks, and 5,685 pipes. The sanctuary is a place of serene beauty and spiritual reflection, where visitors can experience the temple's dedication to peace and community. At the exit foyer, a large stained glass wall titled The Field is White, Already to Harvest (John 4:35) depicts rice and wheat, earning an American Institute of Architects award for religious art. Adjacent to this are massive bronze exit doors, carrying the church seal depicting the peaceful lion, lamb, and child from Isaiah 11:6, and the word PEACE.

Daily Prayer for Peace

One of the temple's most cherished traditions is the Daily Prayer for Peace, held at 1:00 p.m. Central Time. Each day, a prayer is offered on behalf of a selected nation, emphasizing the temple's mission of promoting global peace and unity. This daily ritual is open to the public, inviting everyone to join in this moment of reflection and hope.

Exploring the Temple Grounds

The Independence Temple is more than just a place of worship; it is a hub of education and community activities. The temple houses the church archives, the Temple School, administrative offices, theaters used for meetings and presentations, a museum, and a gift shop. Visitors can also explore a meditation chapel with paintings by Jack Garnier, depicting sacraments being performed around the world. This chapel opens onto a Japanese-style meditation garden, providing a tranquil space for individuals or small groups to reflect and meditate.

A Symbol of the Church's Mission

The temple is regarded as a symbol of the Community of Christ's mission, closely associated with the denomination's developing theology of Zion, or the peaceable Kingdom of God. The first major event held at the temple prior to its dedication was the International Women's Conference in June 1993. The temple has no private ceremonies and is open to everyone, emphasizing its inclusive and welcoming nature. Sacraments performed at the temple include communion, administration to the sick (laying on of hands), and priesthood ordination.

The Historic Temple Lot

The site of the Independence Temple is steeped in historical significance. In 1831, Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, prophesied that a temple to the Lord would be built in Jackson County. The early Latter Day Saints purchased a 73-acre parcel of land known as the greater temple lot, dedicating a portion of it as the site for a temple. Although the church members were driven from the county before any construction began, the Community of Christ's temple now stands on this historic ground, alongside the Auditorium, the headquarters chapel of the Church of Christ (Temple Lot), and a visitor center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In conclusion, the Independence Temple is not just an architectural marvel but a living testament to the pursuit of peace and community. Its doors are open to all, inviting visitors to explore its spiritual, historical, and cultural significance. Whether you are seeking a place of worship, a moment of reflection, or simply a stunning piece of architecture, the Independence Temple offers a unique and enriching experience.
