St. Oliver

St. Oliver Laatzen

St. Oliver

Nestled in the heart of Laatzen, a charming town in the Hannover region of Lower Saxony, Germany, St. Oliver Church stands as a beacon of faith, community, and architectural intrigue. This Catholic parish church, dedicated to the 1975 canonized Saint Oliver Plunkett, is more than just a place of worship; it is a symbol of resilience, growth, and unity for the local Catholic community.

The History of St. Oliver Church

Laatzen, a town predominantly Lutheran since the Reformation, saw a significant shift in its religious demographic towards the end of the 19th century. The influx of Catholics was primarily driven by industrialization and the establishment of the Messegelände, or fairgrounds, in the area. The aftermath of both World Wars also contributed to this growth, as displaced individuals and families sought refuge and new beginnings in Laatzen.

Initially, the Catholic residents of Laatzen attended services at the St. Bernward Church in Döhren, consecrated in 1893. By 1922, they became part of the St. Michael parish in Wülfel. The need for a dedicated place of worship in Laatzen became evident, leading to the foundation of St. Mathilde Church in Laatzen-West. The cornerstone for St. Mathilde was laid in 1937, and it was consecrated on March 13, 1938, by Bishop Joseph Godehard Machens.

As Laatzen continued to develop, particularly in the mid-20th century with the emergence of new districts like Laatzen-Mitte and burgeoning residential areas around Kronsberg and Bemerode, the necessity for a larger and more centrally located church became apparent. Thus, the groundwork for St. Oliver Church was laid on December 22, 1975, by Vicar General Adalbert Sendker. The church was consecrated on August 27, 1977, by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen and has served as the parish church for Laatzen and its neighboring villages since 1982.

From 1993 to 2006, the parish was shepherded by the future Auxiliary Bishop Heinz-Günter Bongartz. Today, the St. Oliver parish, supported by the Association of the Catholic Parish of St. Oliver, Laatzen e.V. since 2008, continues to thrive and serve its community.

Architectural Marvel

St. Oliver Church is a striking example of modern ecclesiastical architecture. Designed by Wolfgang Rauck, it is a towerless central structure based on an irregular hexagonal plan. The lower level is constructed from brick, while the upper level showcases exposed concrete, creating a harmonious blend of materials that is both sturdy and aesthetically pleasing.

One of the most captivating features of St. Oliver is its expansive stained-glass windows, which bathe the interior in a kaleidoscope of colors, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere. The church's tent-like roof, with its highest point slightly shifted towards the altar, is lined with wood on the inside, adding warmth and a sense of intimacy to the space.

The artistic elements within the church were crafted by Claus Kilian, whose work enhances the spiritual and visual experience for visitors and parishioners alike. The church's design not only reflects modern architectural trends but also pays homage to traditional ecclesiastical elements, creating a space that is both innovative and timeless.

A Community Hub

The church also oversees the St. Mathilde Kindergarten, founded on September 1, 1947, which provides a nurturing environment for the youngest members of the community.
