The History of Stiftskirche Lahr

The origins of the Stiftskirche Lahr date back to 1259 when Walter von Geroldseck founded a hospital monastery dedicated to Our Lady of the Augustinian Canons near his castle. Initially situated east of the then-settlement of Lahr, the hospital was separated from the monastery about a century later and relocated to the town. The monastery itself underwent a significant transformation in 1482 when it was converted into a secular collegiate church. With the advent of the Reformation in 1558, the collegiate church was dissolved, and the former monastery church has served as a parish church since then.

The construction of the church began with the eastern parts up to the second bay from the east, followed by an extension westwards by one bay. The original tower, dating back to 1412, was a prominent feature until the church underwent significant modifications in 1851 under the direction of Friedrich Eisenlohr. The building was extended westwards and uniformly remodeled in the style of the initial construction phase. The church sustained severe damage from artillery fire during World War II (March/April 1945) but was meticulously restored in 1956. Further exterior renovations and structural security measures were carried out in 2008.

Architectural Highlights

The Stiftskirche Lahr is a five-bay, three-aisled basilica featuring a narrow fore-chancel bay, a chancel with a five-sided apse, and straight-ended side chapels extending from the side aisles. The western part of the church includes an open vestibule leading to the nave. The slender tower, rebuilt along with the façade in 1877 using the original Gothic portals, adds a distinctive vertical element to the church's profile. The exterior is adorned with buttresses, with those on the chancel and the four eastern ones on the north side dating back to the medieval period, while the rest were renewed in 1851.

Inside, the church's spatial layout reflects the design of the first construction phase. Before 1851, the church was vaulted only up to the second bay from the east, with the nave extending only to the first bay. The flat-roofed western section was harmonized and vaulted in 1851, consistent with the initial Gothic design. The nave features pointed arches with stepped and chamfered arches. The high nave wall is unadorned, with only small, high-set windows breaking the surface. The pillar structure is reminiscent of Romanesque forms, with broad arch settings and a square pillar core flanked by half-columns. Slender services, likely medieval, rise towards the vaults. The cross-ribbed vaults in the side aisles have horizontal keystones, while those in the nave ascend. The ribs are chamfered, and the motif of plate-shaped, projecting bases connected to the plinth by small consoles is inspired by the Strasbourg Cathedral workshop. The chalice-shaped capitals are decorated with buds and foliage, with those in the chancel being the only ones still medieval.

The Interior and Furnishings

The organ, crafted by the Orgelbau Mühleisen company between 1966 and 1972, was renovated and expanded in 1997.
