St. Maria

St. Maria Landau in der Pfalz

St. Maria

St. Maria, known locally as Stadtpfarrkirche St. Maria, stands as a majestic beacon in the heart of Landau in der Pfalz, a charming town in Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. Revered as the most imposing church in the entire Southern Palatinate, this neo-Romanesque cathedral-style edifice is often affectionately referred to as the Cathedral of Landau. Its towering presence and architectural splendor make it a must-visit for anyone exploring this picturesque region.

The Birth of a Landmark

The story of St. Maria begins in 1907 when the Roman Catholic Church Council of Landau decided to construct a new, larger, and more modern church to accommodate the growing congregation of the newly developed Landau-Süd district. The Augustinerkirche on Königsstraße had become too small, prompting the need for this grand project. The foundation stone was laid in 1908, based on the designs of Joseph Cades from Stuttgart. By 1910, the church was nearly complete, with the exception of its two towers. The church was solemnly consecrated in 1911 by the then Bishop of Speyer, Michael von Faulhaber, who would later become the Archbishop of Munich and Freising.

An Architectural Marvel

St. Maria is a testament to architectural ingenuity and historical reverence. Measuring an impressive 73 meters in length and 40 meters in width, with its twin west towers soaring to a height of 60 meters, it is the third-largest church building in the Palatinate, after the Speyer Cathedral and the Abbey Church of Otterberg. The church's interior is a harmonious blend of late Romanesque and early Gothic styles, characterized by round-arched windows and buttresses inspired by the iconic Chartres Cathedral.

Surviving the Test of Time

Like many historical structures, St. Maria has faced its share of adversity. During World War II, the church's sacristy was destroyed by bombing raids. However, it was later rebuilt in a modern style, blending seamlessly with the historic architecture. One of the most captivating features within the church is the 3.5-meter high wooden statue of the Virgin Mary with Child, a masterpiece that draws the admiration of all who visit. The church can be accessed through the northern side entrance on Marienring, inviting visitors to step into a space where history and spirituality converge.

The Resounding Echoes of the Organ

The organ of St. Maria is another jewel in its crown. Crafted in 1924 by the renowned organ-building firm G. F. Steinmeyer & Co. from Oettingen, it originally featured 70 sounding registers across three manuals and a pedal, with electro-pneumatic pocket chests and electric register action. In the 1950s, the instrument underwent modifications to align with the then-prevalent Baroque ideals, including the replacement of the original prospect with a free pipe prospect. Between 2010 and 2012, the organ was meticulously restored by Romanus Seifert & Sohn from Kevelaer, aiming to return it to its original late-Romantic state. Today, approximately 3,500 of the original 4,500 pipes remain, along with much of the original technical apparatus. The historical prospect was also reconstructed, allowing visitors to experience the organ's rich, resonant tones as they were intended nearly a century ago.

The Bells of St. Maria

The bells of St. Maria are a source of pride and a symbol of the church's enduring legacy. On June 12, 1953, six bells were cast by the bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock from Gescher, Westphalia, under the supervision of master craftsman Hans Hüesker. These bells were ceremoniously received on July 4, 1953, alongside the new bells of the collegiate church, in a grand celebration at the town hall square. The following day, Bishop Isidor Markus Emanuel conducted a solemn consecration of the bells. This unique chime is considered one of the finest works of the foundry. The great Christ the King bell resides in the right tower, while the other five bells hang in the left tower. In 2008, all the bells received new clappers to enhance their acoustic quality. The Angelus bell, tuned to C1, rings daily, while the full chime is reserved for high feast days and special occasions.

In conclusion, a visit to St. Maria is not just a journey through a magnificent architectural marvel but a walk through the rich tapestry of history, faith, and community spirit. Whether you are an architecture enthusiast, a history buff, or a spiritual seeker, St. Maria offers an experience that transcends time, leaving an indelible mark on your heart and soul.
