The stadshus complex consists of three interconnected volumes: two elongated rectangular office buildings and a square entrance pavilion. The office buildings, with their sleek lines and modernist aesthetic, house the majority of the municipal offices and have a combined floor area of approximately 18,000 square meters. The square pavilion, which serves as the main entrance, houses the reception, exhibition hall, and the upper part of the library, creating a welcoming space for both employees and visitors.
One of the most distinctive features of Lidingö stadshus is its silver-glazed aluminum façade, adorned with horizontal sun-shading louvers. This high-tech aesthetic, also known as material brutalism, was quite avant-garde for its time. The building’s design prioritizes flexibility, with non-load-bearing internal walls that allow for easy reconfiguration of office spaces to meet changing needs.
The interior of the entrance pavilion contrasts with the utilitarian office spaces, featuring luxurious materials like marble floors, large glass partitions, and wooden ceilings made from Oregon pine.
