The origins of the Annakirche date back to the Middle Ages, a period when the area was under the influence of the Franks. However, the church as we know it today began to take shape in the late 15th century, a time when the veneration of Saint Anna, the mother of Mary, was flourishing. This change in dedication marked a new chapter in the church’s history, aligning it with the popular religious sentiments of the era.
The oldest part of the church is its Romanesque tower, constructed around 1200. Over the centuries, the church has undergone various transformations, most notably in 1527 when the late Gothic nave was completed. This expansion replaced a smaller predecessor, as evidenced by the remnants of the gable connection on the church tower. The completion of this phase is commemorated by an inscription above the main entrance, alongside a stonemason's mark from the workshop of Peter von Koblenz.
The Annakirche is a single-nave chancel tower church, a style typical of the region. Its exterior is relatively unadorned, with the exception of its elegant, slightly recessed spire added in 1846. The late Gothic nave is illuminated by large windows on either side, each featuring intricate tracery. The church’s west facade is framed by diagonal buttresses and features a small rose window with tracery, adding a touch of ornamentation to the otherwise simple design.
Inside, the church retains much of its historical character. The nave, originally featuring an exposed beam ceiling, has undergone several changes over the centuries. The current ceiling was installed in 1864, replacing the beams with a more unified surface. Despite these changes, the church has preserved its historical charm, with the original dimensions of the interior remaining largely intact since 1527.
For a village church, the Annakirche boasts some remarkable interior features. The late Gothic baptismal font, a replica from 1864, bears the original date of 1481 and is adorned with the coats of arms of the House of Württemberg and the Diocese of Speyer, reflecting the political and ecclesiastical powers of the time. The Renaissance-style altar crucifix, likely from the late 16th century, adds to the church’s rich tapestry of historical artifacts.
In 1967, two significant wall paintings were uncovered during renovations. One depicts the apostles Judas Thaddaeus and Matthias, identified by their traditional symbols of a club and an axe. This painting, dating from the late 16th century, is thought to be part of a larger cycle of apostolic imagery. Another notable artwork is the Heavenly Jerusalem on the north wall, created in 1685 to commemorate the local pastor Johann Jakob Kies. This piece was crafted by Johann Christoph Herrmann, a renowned painter known for his biblical scenes.
