The Rich History of the Basilica of St. Martin

The ambitious project to rebuild the church was driven by the local clergy, the Chapter, and the University, with substantial support from the community. The first stone was laid on May 5, 1747, by Francesco II Caracciolo, Duke of Martina, and the new church began to take shape. The facade, adorned with intricate sculptures and decorations, was one of the first elements to be completed, showcasing the craftsmanship of Giuseppe Morgese and his sons.

Despite the passing of Mariani and Giuseppe Morgese during the construction, the project continued under the skilled hands of local artisans. By 1752, the essential structures of the first half of the church were completed, and the second phase of construction commenced, including the addition of two large chapels in the transept. The church was finally consecrated on November 10, 1763, and dedicated to St. Martin of Tours.

The lower order of the facade features six pilasters topped with Ionic capitals, and four marble statues representing St. John the Baptist, St. Peter, St. Paul, and St. Joseph. The upper order is adorned with a central niche housing a statue of St. Martin, flanked by two smaller niches with statues of angels.

As you step inside, the basilica's Latin cross plan unfolds, revealing an interior space measuring 47.30 by 33.20 meters.
