Jean Cocteau Museum

Jean Cocteau Museum Menton

Jean Cocteau Museum

Perched along the stunning French Riviera in the picturesque town of Menton, the Jean Cocteau Museum (Musée Jean-Cocteau - Collection Séverin Wunderman) is a haven for art lovers and admirers of one of France's most versatile and enigmatic artists. This museum is dedicated to the life and works of Jean Cocteau, a multi-talented artist, poet, filmmaker, and playwright whose influence on 20th-century art and culture is immeasurable.

The Vision Behind the Museum

The Jean Cocteau Museum stands as a testament to the artist's profound impact on the world of art. The museum’s inception can be traced back to 2003 when the Menton city council decided to create a dedicated space to celebrate Cocteau's legacy. An international competition held in 2007 saw the selection of French architect Rudy Ricciotti to design the museum. Ricciotti, known for his 'hedonist architecture,' drew inspiration from Cocteau's life and works, resulting in a building that is both a tribute to and a reflection of the artist's unique style.

A Striking Architectural Marvel

The museum's architecture is nothing short of extraordinary. Ricciotti’s design features a distinctive facade that has been described as resembling a fierce set of teeth or a string of alabaster forearms holding up the sky. This bold and innovative design creates an interplay of structural forces that evoke Cocteau's enigmatic personality and his works on paper. The building's black and white color scheme further enhances this effect, symbolizing the contrasts and dualities that defined Cocteau's life and art.

A Treasure Trove of Art

The Jean Cocteau Museum houses nearly 1,000 works by Cocteau, making it one of the most comprehensive collections dedicated to the artist. The collection is divided into seven parts and includes a wide range of Cocteau's graphic works, from early avant-garde pieces created with pencil, pastel, and watercolors to his later films, including extensive clips from his renowned Orphic Trilogy. The majority of the collection was donated by American businessman and Cocteau enthusiast Séverin Wunderman, who began collecting Cocteau's works at the age of 19.

More Than Just Cocteau

In addition to Cocteau's works, the museum also features a collection of 240 original photographic prints by Lucien Clergue, capturing moments from the filming of Testament of Orpheus. These photographs provide a fascinating glimpse into Cocteau's creative process and his interactions with other artists and filmmakers of his time.

A Center for Study and Conservation

The Jean Cocteau Museum is not just a place to view art; it is also a center for the study and conservation of Cocteau's works. The museum houses a documentation center that contains books, magazines, journals, catalogs, and monographs on Cocteau. An Office of Graphic Art within the museum ensures the conservation and preservation of the collection when it is not on display. Visitors can also enjoy the museum's cafe and shop, making it a perfect destination for a leisurely day of art appreciation.

Jean Cocteau's Connection to Menton

Jean Cocteau's relationship with Menton began in the 1950s when he frequently visited the nearby villa Santo Sospir in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. In 1955, he attended the Classical Music Festival in Menton and developed a deep affection for the town. This led to his friendship with the mayor, who invited Cocteau to decorate the town's wedding hall. Cocteau's work on the wedding hall, completed in 1958, earned him honorary citizenship of Menton.

The Bastion Museum

In addition to the Jean Cocteau Museum, visitors can explore the Bastion Museum, a sister museum located in a 17th-century fort near the harbor. Cocteau himself worked on rearranging and decorating the Bastion in his final years, selecting pieces for display. The Bastion Museum opened to the public in 1966, three years after Cocteau's death, and remains a popular attraction for those interested in his work.

Temporary Closure and Future Prospects

Unfortunately, the Jean Cocteau Museum was severely affected by a storm in October 2018, leading to its temporary closure. The basement, where many works were stored, was flooded, causing significant damage. As a result, the museum remains closed for repairs and restoration efforts. However, a partial exhibition has been set up at the Bastion Museum, allowing visitors to continue enjoying Cocteau's art while the main museum undergoes restoration.

Despite its current closure, the Jean Cocteau Museum remains a beacon of artistic brilliance on the French Riviera. Its striking architecture, extensive collection, and deep connection to Cocteau's life and work make it a must-visit destination for art lovers and cultural enthusiasts. Whether you are a long-time admirer of Cocteau or new to his world, a visit to the Jean Cocteau Museum promises an enriching and inspiring experience.
