The Remarkable Journey of St. Joseph’s Chapel

Originally erected in 1864 in Wallerfangen, the chapel was commissioned by Céphalie Thierry, a descendant of the de Galhau family, at their family estate, now known as Schloss Villeroy. Designed by the architect Franz Georg Himpler, who later gained fame in America, the chapel was inspired by the grandeur of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, albeit on a more modest scale.

In a remarkable feat of engineering and dedication, the chapel was dismantled in 1878/1879 and transported via treidelschiff (a type of barge) along the Saar River to its new home in Mettlach. This relocation was orchestrated by Eugen von Boch, a prominent figure in the Villeroy & Boch ceramic company, who envisioned the chapel serving the new hospital in Mettlach. The chapel was reassembled in 1882 with slight modifications, including the addition of a family crypt.

Over time, the chapel faced the ravages of war and weather, leading to significant restoration efforts beginning in 2003. These painstaking renovations, which took a decade and over a million euros, were a collaborative effort involving the Boch-Galhau family, the German Foundation for Monument Protection, and governmental bodies. The restoration work meticulously revived the chapel’s original splendor, removing layers of white plaster and repairing damaged tiles and murals.

In recognition of their dedication to preserving this historical treasure, the Boch family received the 7th Saarland Monument Preservation Award in 2013, celebrating their commitment to cultural heritage.
