The church's significance was further cemented when Pope Urban II, fresh from preaching the First Crusade in Clermont, consecrated it on August 25, 1096. The name Notre-Dame de l'Espinasse emerged in the 13th century, inspired by a revered relic: a thorn from the Holy Crown of the Savior.

Trials and Tribulations

The church endured significant turmoil during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century. Protestant forces targeted the church and priory on three separate occasions—in 1561, 1568, and 1582—resulting in considerable destruction. With Catholic worship banned in Millau, the church lay in ruins until 1601, and its bell tower collapsed in 1613.

Reconstruction began in earnest in 1633 under the guidance of architect Jacques Beaudouin. By 1646, the church reopened, though the restoration continued for another eleven years. The addition of three chapels between 1683 and 1715, and lateral galleries along the nave in 1759-1760, further enhanced its grandeur.

Architectural Marvel

Église Notre-Dame de l'Espinasse is an architectural gem, oriented east-west with a distinctive octagonal bell tower rising on the south side. The church's stained glass windows are a visual delight, created in three distinct periods. The chapels and choir feature seven windows crafted by Grenade and Besseyrias in 1869, while the atelier of Louis Gesta of Toulouse added another in 1921. In 1982, Claude Baillon designed eight modern windows for the nave, replacing those destroyed in a storm the previous year.
