Bishop's Palace

Nestled in the heart of Nitra, Slovakia, the Bishop's Palace, or Biskupský palác as it's known locally, stands as a testament to centuries of history and architectural evolution. Originally, the ground floor served economic purposes, including stables before a fire and subsequent demolitions altered much of the Gothic palace. Even today, remnants of this era can be found in the western part of the ground floor, now a cellar beneath the western wing of the palace. A water cistern, built in the northwest corner of the courtyard in the late 15th century, once collected rainwater from the roofs, though it was filled in during later renovations.

The Bishop's Palace is a blend of architectural styles, with its exterior walls resting on Romanesque fortifications and its interior illuminated by Gothic windows. The only visible medieval detail today is a window on the northern façade, adorned with tracery. The artistic craftsmanship of the palace’s representative rooms dates from 1810 to 1830, featuring valuable antique furniture in the Empire style and walls adorned with sacred paintings.

A prominent feature of both the palace and the cathedral is the double-domed tower, originally built in 1642 and later remodeled between 1773 and 1839. This tower remains a striking element of the Nitra skyline.

Throughout its history, the Bishop's Palace has adapted to the needs of its occupants. During the tenure of Bishop Zachariáš Mošovský in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the functions of the palace's spaces were clearly defined. The cellars under the western wing were used for storage, while the ground floors served as economic and operational facilities. Some parts of the ground floor provided living quarters for economic officials and servants, and also housed a kitchen, bakery, and food storage.

The upper floors were reserved for the bishop's private use, with rooms for representation, guests, and administration. Notably, the attic underwent a transformation in the 18th century under Bishop Ladislav Adam Erdődy, who renovated it to serve as the headquarters of the Archaeological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in the 20th century. Today, it functions as a residential-office floor.
