La República

La República Nou Barris

La República

La República, also known as Homenatge a Pi i Margall, stands proudly as a monument of historical and cultural significance in the bustling city of Barcelona. Located in the district of Nou Barris, this striking sculpture is dedicated to the First Spanish Republic and one of its presidents, Francesc Pi i Margall. Though it resides in a traffic roundabout, making direct access a bit challenging, its towering presence is hard to miss.

The History of La República

The origins of this monument date back to 1915, when the idea to honor Pi i Margall was first conceived. Initially intended to be placed at Plaça del Cinc d'Oros, the project faced several delays. It wasn't until the Second Spanish Republic that the project gained momentum again, leading to a public competition in 1932. Sculptor Josep Viladomat emerged victorious with his design of a female figure symbolizing the Republic, adorned with a Phrygian cap and holding a laurel branch.

Crafted in 1934, the bronze statue was initially part of a larger ensemble that included an obelisk and a medallion by Joan Pie. It was inaugurated in 1936 by the President of the Generalitat, Lluís Companys. However, the advent of the Franco regime saw the removal of the statue and medallion, which were replaced by symbols of the new order. Fortunately, the original pieces were preserved in a municipal warehouse, awaiting a future return to public display.

The Monument's Journey

With the arrival of democracy, there was a renewed interest in restoring the monument to its rightful place. After several proposed locations and temporary exhibitions, the statue found a permanent home in 1990 at Plaça de Llucmajor. This relocation was part of a new monument designed by architects Albert Viaplana and Helio Piñón, featuring a modern steel structure that complements the historical statue. The medallion of Pi i Margall was also integrated into the new design.

In 2016, reflecting the monument's significance, the square was officially renamed Plaça de la República. This change honored a long-standing community desire and coincided with the anniversary of the Second Republic's proclamation on April 14, 1931.
