In the heart of Hessen, Germany, nestled within the picturesque landscape of Oestrich-Winkel, lies the remarkable Polder Ingelheim. This flood protection polder is not just a feat of engineering but a testament to human ingenuity and environmental harmony. As you explore this hidden gem, you'll discover a place where nature and technology converge to protect and preserve the beautiful Middle Rhine Valley.
Polder Ingelheim was conceived as part of the Integrated Rhine Program, a visionary project initiated in the 1980s. The goal was to restore the natural flood protection that had been compromised by the Rhine straightening and the construction of weirs in the southern Upper Rhine. Located at Rhine kilometer 517, this polder covers a vast 162 hectares of agricultural land and can hold up to 4.5 million cubic meters of water.
The planning and construction of Polder Ingelheim were remarkably swift, taking only two years to finalize plans and another two years to build. The process was smooth, with only 18 objections, thanks to early consultations with key stakeholders, including local authorities, conservationists, and farmers. By the summer of 2006, the polder was operational, ready to serve its purpose of flood mitigation.
The polder is ingeniously designed, stretching between the existing Rhine main dike in the north and the naturally rising terrain towards the A60 highway in the south. To the west, the existing eastern Selz dike is complemented by a 380-meter-long western polder dike, while the east features a 900-meter-long dike cutting through the floodplain. These structures run nearly parallel, maintaining a distance of about 1600 meters.
At the heart of this engineering marvel is the fish belly flap weir, a unique inlet and outlet structure with two 13-meter-wide fields. This weir, along with a 2-meter-deep stilling basin, was meticulously designed using model tests at the University of Karlsruhe. The structure can theoretically handle 213 cubic meters per second, with a damming height of around 3.30 meters above the inlet threshold. All passages in the dikes are sealable, ensuring the polder's effectiveness in flood events.
The polder is designed to be filled during flood events occurring every 5 to 20 years. When the water level at the Kaub gauge reaches 690 cm, the fish belly flaps are fully lowered, allowing the polder to flood. This happened for the first time on the night of January 16, 2011. Within hours of opening, the water level at the next gauge stabilized and then began to fall, demonstrating the polder's effectiveness. By morning, the polder was 80% flooded, showcasing its capacity to hold up to 2.5 million cubic meters of water.
Visiting Polder Ingelheim is not just about observing engineering prowess; it's also an opportunity to immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the Rhine Valley. As you stroll along the dikes, you'll be surrounded by lush greenery and the gentle flow of the Rhine, offering a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
The area is a haven for nature enthusiasts, with diverse flora and fauna thriving in the unique wetland environment. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting various species that call this area home. The polder's integration into the landscape is a testament to the harmonious coexistence of human intervention and nature.
Today, Polder Ingelheim stands as a crucial component of flood management along the Rhine. Its ability to mitigate flood peaks protects the Middle Rhine Valley, ensuring the safety of surrounding communities and the preservation of local ecosystems. The polder is a shining example of how innovative engineering can work hand in hand with nature to address modern challenges.
Polder Ingelheim is more than just a flood protection measure; it's a symbol of resilience and foresight. As you explore this remarkable site, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance between human needs and environmental stewardship. Whether you're an engineering enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Polder Ingelheim offers a unique and enriching experience.
