The History of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Hens

The origins of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Hens date back to the 16th century, rooted in a fascinating legend. According to popular tradition, during the octave of Easter, some hens scratching the ground unearthed a small wooden panel depicting the Madonna del Carmine. This miraculous discovery led to the image being attributed with eight miracles, sparking widespread devotion among the faithful.

The first miracle occurred in 1609 when a crippled man, who had fallen asleep in front of a room associated with the ancient parish of San Felice, dreamt of the Madonna instructing him to rise and discard his crutches. Upon waking, he found himself miraculously healed. This event drew significant attention to the small oratory where the image was kept, leading to further miraculous healings and solidifying the devotion to the Madonna del Carmine, now affectionately known as the Madonna delle Galline.

In response to the growing number of devotees, it was decided to build a more fitting church. Construction began in 1610 under the direction of Bishop Lunadoro, and by 1615, a new church had been erected. Over the years, the church was embellished and expanded, with significant additions including a splendid coffered wooden ceiling in 1712 and a magnificent Baroque altar completed in 1797.

The shrine has undergone several restorations, notably in 1856 and following the devastating earthquake of 1980, which caused considerable damage. In 1954, the church was elevated to the status of a Marian sanctuary by Monsignor Fortunato Zoppas, further cementing its significance in the religious landscape of Pagani.

Architectural Features

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Hens boasts a striking Baroque façade, adorned with stucco decorations and flanked by allegorical statues of Modesty and Hope. Above the main portal, a bas-relief depicts the Madonna del Carmelo with the Child, crowned by two cherubs, adding to the church's celestial charm.

Inside, the sanctuary features a single nave with Corinthian pilasters framing three arches, each housing altars. The most prominent of these is the third chapel, which houses an 18th-century statue of the Madonna del Carmine. The coffered wooden ceiling, likely added during the 1712 restoration, adds to the sanctuary's opulent interior.

One of the most notable interior features is the wooden organ with a decorated choir loft, introduced in 1790. The sanctuary's altars, particularly the Baroque main altar and the side altars from the 19th century, are masterpieces of religious art and craftsmanship.

The Festival of Our Lady of the Hens

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Hens is not only a place of worship but also the heart of a unique and vibrant festival celebrated on the Sunday after Easter, known as the Festa della Madonna delle Galline. This festival features a procession where the statue of the Madonna del Carmine is carried on a cart by the faithful, who offer various birds, especially hens, as well as cakes and rustic pies, reflecting the agricultural roots of the local community.

Along the procession route, devotees create toselli, small shrines adorned with satin blankets, lace, and terracotta molds. In larger courtyards, these shrines are more elaborate, often including a statuette of the Virgin and small poultry coops, sometimes accompanied by exhibitions and stalls.

The festival's most distinctive feature is the tammurriata, a lively traditional music and dance that begins on the Friday after Easter and continues through Sunday, culminating at dawn on Monday when dancers lay their tambourines at the feet of the Madonna. This joyous celebration, filled with music, dance, and community spirit, encapsulates the deep cultural and religious significance of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Hens.
