In the heart of Pietra Ligure, Italy, lies the charming Santissima Annunziata, a historic oratory known in the local language as the Oratorio della Santissima Annunziata. This captivating site, nestled in Piazza San Pio V, is a testament to the rich religious and cultural heritage of the region. With its intriguing history and architectural beauty, Santissima Annunziata is a must-visit for anyone exploring the picturesque town of Pietra Ligure.
The origins of Santissima Annunziata date back to 1481, when the Compagnia dei Battuti, a group of disciplinants, donated an ancient oratory to the Dominican friars. This marked the beginning of a spiritual journey that would see the construction of a convent, a cloister, and the first church dedicated to the Annunciation. The church was consecrated in 1519, and the oratory of the disciplinants became the sacristy of the new religious complex.
Among the notable figures associated with Santissima Annunziata is Michele Ghisleri, who resided here during Lent in 1550. He later ascended to the papacy as Pius V and was canonized in 1713. The church underwent significant expansion from 1664 to 1683, resulting in the structure we see today. However, the church faced challenges, including the suppression of convents by the Republic of Liguria in 1798, leading to its temporary closure.
Visitors to Santissima Annunziata are greeted by a single nave, which houses a remarkable array of artistic and religious treasures. The apse features a large icon of the Annunciation, crafted by Benedetto Brandimarte in 1593. The church also boasts a marble main altar from 1890 and four side altars, each with its own unique history and artistic value.
The most notable of these is the 17th-century altar of the Madonna del Rosario, adorned with a stunning array of multicolored marble inlays. Opposite this altar is one dedicated to Saints Anna, Libera, and Liborio, featuring a painting donated by the noble Basadonne family in the 18th century. The altars of Saint Lucia and Saint Pius V further enrich the church's artistic heritage.
In 1809, the church became the oratory of the Confraternity of Death and Prayer, also known as the Compagnia dei Neri. This confraternity, founded in 1633, is dedicated to burying the poor and shipwrecked and assisting those condemned to death. Today, the church is home to the Confraternity of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, known as the Rossi, which preserves the statue of its patron saint, crafted by Paolo Garaventa in 1858.
The church's traditions are vibrant and deeply rooted in local culture. The Rossi participate in the Good Friday evening procession and oversee the octave of the dead from November 3 to 10. The church also hosts the feast of the Holy Rosary on the first Sunday of October and the feast of Saint Catherine on the last Sunday of November, complete with traditional treats like baccalà fritters and Santa Caterina biscuits.
The late Gothic bell tower, dating back to the late 15th century, is the only surviving element of the original church. It houses a bell from 1529, adding to the historical charm of the site. The church underwent extensive restoration in the late 19th century, both inside and out, thanks to the efforts of local noblewoman Carlotta Bosio Regina. The addition of an orchestra and an organ by renowned organ builder William George Trice further enhanced its musical heritage.
Among the church's artistic treasures is the processional statue of the Madonna del Rosario, attributed to the renowned sculptor Anton Maria Maragliano. This masterpiece, restored in 2010, is carried in procession every October and has been showcased in exhibitions celebrating Mediterranean confraternities.
Santissima Annunziata is more than just a religious site; it is a living testament to the rich history and vibrant traditions of Pietra Ligure. Whether you're drawn by its artistic treasures, its historical significance, or its cultural festivities, a visit to Santissima Annunziata promises to be a memorable experience.
