However, the political turmoil of the time, marked by the Venetian conquest of the Patriarchal State of Aquileia between 1419 and 1420, delayed the commencement of the building works. It was only in June 1424, under the authorization of Pope Martin V and the Bishop of Concordia, Enrico di Strassoldo, that the first stone was laid. The land for the convent, situated on the then outskirts of the urban core, was generously provided by the Dukes of Austria at the behest of the local populace.

The consecration of the church took place in 1434, officiated by Guglielmo da Portogruaro, the Bishop of Jesolo. Over the centuries, the complex underwent several modifications, reflecting the changing architectural styles and functional needs of the time. However, the convent's religious function was abruptly halted around 1769 when the Republic of Venice suppressed the church and convent. Subsequently, the buildings were auctioned off and repurposed for various uses, including as a soup kitchen, theater, fruit and vegetable market, and tavern. The 19th century saw the demolition of the church's bell tower due to structural concerns.

In the early 1970s, the Municipality of Pordenone acquired the church and cloister, and in 1991, the rest of the complex. The site has since undergone significant restoration efforts, with notable renovations in 1972, 1984, and 2000, ensuring the preservation of this historical gem. Today, the Former convent of Saint Francis is a thriving venue for conferences, exhibitions, concerts, and municipal activities, including a literary café.

Although many of these artworks are now preserved in the Civic Museum of Art, several fresco fragments remain visible within the church. Above the entrance on Vicolo San Francesco, visitors can admire a frescoed lunette by Calderari, depicting Saint Francis receiving the stigmata.

The Cloister
