Before the advent of chain shipping in the late 19th century, ships and barges were hauled upstream by the sheer muscle power of horses, guided by the Leinreiter who rode them.

To mitigate these risks, the Leinreiter rode their horses side-saddle, ready to leap off at a moment's notice in case of an emergency.

The Sculpture and Its Creation

After three years of meticulous work, the sculpture was cast in a single piece and unveiled on June 9, 1994.

Originally, the sculpture was placed directly along the old towpath at the Mainufer. However, in 2016, when a new bike path was constructed at the landing site, the monument, along with its sandstone base and foundation weighing over 20 tons, was moved three meters to its current location.

The Leinreiter-Denkmal Today

Since its installation, the Leinreiter-Denkmal has become one of Rüsselsheim's most recognizable landmarks. Its influence extends beyond its physical presence, as a nearby brewery has incorporated the monument into its logo, and it even features on various merchandise like T-shirts, promoting the town's unique heritage.
