In the charming town of Rüsselsheim am Main, nestled along the scenic banks of the Main River, lies a monument that pays homage to a bygone era of labor and perseverance – the Leinreiter-Denkmal. This striking bronze sculpture, created by the talented Darmstadt artist Detlef Kraft in 1993, stands as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Leinreiter, or towpath riders, who once played a vital role in the river's bustling trade.
The Leinreiter-Denkmal is strategically located at the Mainufer, on the central parking lot before the flood protection dike, marking the beginning of Rüsselsheim's downtown area. This location is no coincidence, as it was here, along the old towpaths, that these unsung heroes of the river trade toiled tirelessly. Before the advent of chain shipping in the late 19th century, ships and barges were hauled upstream by the sheer muscle power of horses, guided by the Leinreiter who rode them.
The work of the Leinreiter was grueling and fraught with danger. Rain and high water often turned the towpaths into treacherous quagmires, and the swift currents of the Main could easily drag the ships into the river's center. To mitigate these risks, the Leinreiter rode their horses side-saddle, ready to leap off at a moment's notice in case of an emergency.
Standing at an impressive height of 3.15 meters, the Leinreiter-Denkmal is slightly larger than life, capturing the essence of the Leinreiter and his steadfast horse in a moment of quiet strength. The rider sits side-saddle, gazing back towards where the ship he was guiding would have been, while the horse stands with its head bowed, embodying both power and patience.
Detlef Kraft's artistic vision for the sculpture was chosen from among seven models in a competition initiated by the town of Rüsselsheim. The aim was to create a realistic portrayal that would honor the town's rich trading tradition between Mainz and Frankfurt. After three years of meticulous work, the sculpture was cast in a single piece and unveiled on June 9, 1994.
Originally, the sculpture was placed directly along the old towpath at the Mainufer. However, in 2016, when a new bike path was constructed at the landing site, the monument, along with its sandstone base and foundation weighing over 20 tons, was moved three meters to its current location.
