Chapelle du Petit-Saint-Dié

The Chapelle du Petit-Saint-Dié in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges is a hidden gem nestled in the lush landscapes of northeastern France. This quaint chapel, with its roots in medieval history, offers visitors a serene escape and a journey through time. Its modest yet charming architecture stands as a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and casual tourists alike.

The Origins of Chapelle du Petit-Saint-Dié

The story of the Chapelle du Petit-Saint-Dié begins around 660 AD when a monk named Déodat, who would later be canonized as Saint Dié, settled at the foot of the Kemberg massif. Here, he established a small oratory dedicated to Martin of Tours. This site was not chosen at random; it was once a Gallo-Roman sanctuary developed around ferruginous springs and abandoned in the mid-4th century. A Gallo-Roman stele, discovered nearby and incorporated into the chapel's porch wall, serves as a reminder of this ancient heritage.

Saint Dié passed away in 679 and was buried in his oratory. The chapel we see today was reconstructed in the 15th century, evolving from this original place of worship. Over the centuries, the area known as Petit-Saint-Dié or Vieux-Saint-Dié remained a humble hamlet, while the city developed further northeast near the monastery built by Déodat's disciples.

A Chapel of Many Roles

Despite the relocation of Saint Dié’s sarcophagus to the Church of Saint-Maurice in 1003, the chapel continued to serve as the parish church for the residents of the Saint-Martin suburb. However, by 1728, the chapel was deemed too small, outdated, and remote, leading parishioners to favor a new Saint-Martin church, which was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1895 and later replaced by the current church.

The Petit-Saint-Dié experienced a brief resurgence in the late 18th century with the establishment of a hydrotherapy center utilizing the ferruginous waters of the Saint-Martin fountains. This activity, however, gradually declined in the early 19th century.

Restoration and Preservation

The chapel underwent restoration in 1736 and 1754, courtesy of canons Billaut and Redoubté. It became part of national assets sold from 1791 onwards and was purchased in 1795 by Nicolas Martin, along with the adjoining house intended for the officiant. In 1863, the diocese of Saint-Dié acquired the chapel, initiating significant restorations. During this period, the arched windows were fitted with neo-Gothic tracery and stained glass from the workshops of Marchal in Nancy.

Between 1889 and 1899, the chapel was part of a Carmelite convent before being sold to former printer Louis Humbert. In November 1944, the chapel suffered damage to its roof and windows due to nearby railway dynamite explosions. Despite the demolition of convent buildings for real estate projects in the latter half of the 20th century, the chapel was preserved. It was leased by the Société philomatique vosgienne in 1969 and purchased by the city in 1977. The stained glass windows, depicting ten legendary episodes from Saint Dié’s life, were restored or reconstructed identically in the early 1970s.
