Musée municipal de Saint-Dizier

Located in the charming town of Saint-Dizier, the Musée municipal de Saint-Dizier is a hidden gem that offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the region's rich history and cultural heritage. This museum, which has been a prominent feature of the town since the late 19th century, is housed in a beautiful historic building that adds to its allure. Whether you are a history enthusiast, an art lover, or simply looking for an engaging way to spend an afternoon, the Musée municipal de Saint-Dizier has something for everyone.

The Building

The Musée de Saint-Dizier's journey began in the latter half of the 19th century, thanks to the efforts of Jules-Félix Paulin. On November 4, 1869, the town council accepted the concept of establishing a museum, and by January 24, 1870, the first display case containing items donated by H. Gayot and Jules-Félix Paulin was presented at the Hôtel de Ville. However, the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 put the project on hold for about a decade, and the objects were returned to their donors.

In 1881, the museum re-emerged within the Hôtel de Ville, once again driven by Jules-Félix Paulin, a member of the Société des Lettres de Saint-Dizier. By 1884, the museum had become the property of the city, and Louis Houdard-Casalta was appointed as its curator, a position he held until 1909. The museum's collection was displayed in a large room within the Hôtel de Ville, but World War II led to the dispersion of some of its treasures.

In 1950, the museum reopened in a section of the Hôtel de Ville, with Vladimir Stchépinsky serving as curator until 1975. On June 19, 1964, the museum moved to its current location in the former Hôtel de Postes, a building that exudes historical charm and provides a fitting backdrop for the museum's diverse collections. After undergoing extensive renovations and a thorough inventory of its collections from 2009 to 2012, the museum reopened to the public in February 2013.

The Treasures of Saint-Dizier

One of the highlights of the museum is the Salle des Trésors de Saint-Dizier, which showcases artifacts unearthed during preventive excavations at the Tuilerie site. Here, you will find meticulously reconstructed burial sites of three individuals: a young man, a young woman, and an elderly person. The young man's grave, known as Sépulture 11, is particularly intriguing. Standing at 1.82 meters tall, he was a vassal of Thierry I for the Saint-Dizier region and was buried with a sword that bore runic inscriptions. This sword, one of the few runic swords discovered in France, is a testament to the region's historical significance and its connections to broader European history.

The Ornithological Room

Another fascinating exhibit is the Ornithological Room, which houses the Jean-François Lescuyer collection. This room features art deco display cases filled with an impressive array of bird specimens. Additionally, it includes a pre-Columbian mummy brought back from Colombia by Baron de Diétrich in 1892, adding an exotic touch to the museum's offerings.

The Art Foundry Room

The museum also pays homage to the region's industrial heritage with a room dedicated to art foundries. This exhibit highlights the artistic castings produced by the foundries of Saint-Dizier, particularly those of Val d'Osne and Varenne. Visitors can admire the works of renowned artists such as Mathurin Moreau, Isidore Bonheur, and Hector Guimard, whose creations showcase the skill and craftsmanship of the local foundries.

The Archaeological Room

For those interested in archaeology, the museum offers a room filled with artifacts from various periods, ranging from prehistory to the Middle Ages. These objects, discovered during regional excavations, provide valuable insights into the daily lives and cultures of the people who once inhabited the area.

In conclusion, the Musée municipal de Saint-Dizier is a captivating destination that offers a rich tapestry of history, art, and culture. Its carefully curated exhibits and beautifully restored building make it a must-visit attraction for anyone exploring the town of Saint-Dizier. Whether you are delving into the ancient past, admiring exquisite art, or learning about the region's industrial heritage, the museum promises an enriching and enjoyable experience for all.
