Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum

Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum Salzwedel

Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum

Nestled in the charming town of Salzwedel in Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany, the Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum stands as a testament to the region's rich historical tapestry and cultural heritage. Founded in 1836, this museum is named after the esteemed prehistorian and high school professor Johann Friedrich Danneil, whose passion for history and archaeology laid the foundation for what has become one of the most significant cultural institutions in the Altmark region.

The History of Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum

The origins of the Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum date back to its establishment by the Altmärkischer Verein für vaterländische Geschichte und Industrie (Altmark Association for Patriotic History and Industry), where Danneil played a pivotal role. Initially, the museum's collection was housed in various locations, including the Salzwedel Town Hall, a side chapel of the Marienkirche, and subsequently, the district court. The museum's early collection comprised numerous prehistoric and early historical artifacts from the Altmark region, making it one of Germany's first association museums.

In 1929, the museum found a more permanent home in the Propstei, a historic building located just south of the Marienkirche. This relocation marked a significant milestone as the museum transitioned into a district homeland museum and was no longer managed by the association. The museum was expanded and reopened on September 28, 1932, under the name Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum. Over the years, the collection grew to include medieval and later historical artifacts, reflecting the region's diverse cultural heritage.

Despite the tumultuous events of the 20th century, including World War II and the ideological pressures of the Nazi regime, the museum's collection remained largely intact. During the land reforms of the post-war period, the museum acquired numerous additional artifacts from private collections of dispossessed individuals and refugees from the German Democratic Republic (GDR). In 1956, the museum also took over the open-air museum Diesdorf, although it was later separated again in 1989.

The Propstei Building

The Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum is housed in the historic Propstei building, a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture with a rich history of its own. Originally, the site was home to the house of the archdeacon of Salzwedel in 1474. In 1578, Albrecht von der Schulenburg incorporated parts of the original structure to create a stately manor. The building features a distinctive half-timbered construction with a striking stair tower, adding to its architectural charm. In 1754, a sandstone portal was added, enhancing the building's grandeur. The Propstei remained extraterritorial, not part of the town of Salzwedel, until it was purchased by the city in 1928.

The Museum Collection

Today, the Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum boasts an impressive collection of over 30,000 cataloged artifacts from the entire Altmark region. The collection includes items from former museums in the area, such as the Heimatmuseum Gardelegen. Among the museum's most renowned exhibits are the Salzwedeler Madonna, a wooden sculpture dating back to 1225/1230, and the Weinberg Altar, created in 1582 by the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Younger. This altar, originally housed in the Salzwedel Monastery Church, depicts the parable of the workers in the vineyard from the Gospel of Matthew as an allegory of the Reformation.

The museum's library is equally impressive, comprising around 20,000 books and an equal number of periodicals. This extensive collection provides valuable insights into the region's history and serves as a resource for researchers and history enthusiasts alike.

Exhibitions and Educational Programs

The Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum offers a diverse range of exhibitions and educational programs that cater to visitors of all ages. In addition to its permanent exhibition, the museum hosts special exhibitions on local history topics. Notable past exhibitions include Documents of the Wende (2009-2010), which explored the events surrounding the reunification of Germany.

The museum also places a strong emphasis on educational initiatives, regularly organizing action days and workshops as part of its museum education concept. These programs provide hands-on learning experiences, allowing visitors to engage with history in an interactive and immersive manner. Additionally, the museum showcases the works of local artists, fostering a vibrant cultural exchange within the community.

The Langobardenwerkstatt Zethlingen

Since 1990, the Langobardenwerkstatt Zethlingen, located in the village of Zethlingen, has been an integral part of the Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum. Situated at a site with a 2,000-year-old cremation grave field attributed to the Lombards, this workshop serves as an educational center where visitors can learn about the life and culture of the Lombards. Through engaging displays and hands-on activities, the Langobardenwerkstatt brings history to life, offering a unique glimpse into the past.

In conclusion, the Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum is not just a repository of historical artifacts but a vibrant cultural institution that celebrates the rich heritage of the Altmark region. Its extensive collection, historic setting, and engaging educational programs make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in delving into the fascinating history of Salzwedel and its surroundings. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a curious traveler, or a local resident, a visit to this remarkable museum promises an enriching and memorable experience.
