Santa Maria della Pietà

Santa Maria della Pietà San Severo

Santa Maria della Pietà

Nestled in the charming town of San Severo, Italy, the Santa Maria della Pietà, or Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pietà, stands as a testament to the magnificence of Baroque architecture. This national monument, also known as the Church of the Souls in Purgatory, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by those who appreciate history, art, and spirituality.

The History of Santa Maria della Pietà

The origins of Santa Maria della Pietà date back to the late 16th century when the Arciconfraternita dell'Orazione e Morte di N.S.G.C. was founded in 1580. Officially established in 1693, this lay congregation took charge of the church in 1707. The current structure was completed in the early 18th century, making it one of the most significant Baroque monuments in the region.

The church's history is intertwined with legends and local lore. One such tale tells of a miraculous fresco of the Madonna della Pietà, which was said to have bled after being attacked by an irate pilgrim in 1557. This story adds an aura of mystique and reverence to the already awe-inspiring edifice.

Exploring the Interior

Stepping inside Santa Maria della Pietà is like entering a different world, where every inch is adorned with artistic grandeur. The interior is lavishly decorated with precious marble inlays crafted by Aniello Greco, completed by 1753. The walls are a feast for the eyes, adorned with gilded stuccoes and Baroque paintings depicting the lives of Jesus and Mary, masterfully created by Aurelio Gentilotti.

Dominating the church's interior is the grand altar, a masterpiece by Neapolitan marble workers Michele Salemme and Antonio Pelliccia, finished in 1772. This altar houses the renowned fresco of the Madonna della Pietà, making it a focal point for pilgrims and art lovers alike. The altar's intricate design and the surrounding marble balustrade are testaments to the craftsmanship of the period.

Notable Features and Artifacts

To the left of the main altar, visitors can venerate the relics of Saint Adeodato, displayed in a beautifully adorned wooden reliquary set within a marble altar crafted by Aniello Greco in 1760. On the right, the church boasts an impressive pipe organ by Fulvio d'Onofrio, installed in 1873, replacing the original by Gennaro Bradetta. The organ’s majestic sound fills the church, adding to its spiritual ambiance.

Beyond the organ lies the choir room, surrounded by stern walnut stalls dating back to the 18th century. The rococo-style flooring, made of Gargano stone and multicolored marbles, is the work of Pietro and Gregorio Palmieri from Pescocostanzo, completed in 1762. This unique flooring adds a touch of elegance to the already opulent interior.

The Side Chapels

The six side chapels of Santa Maria della Pietà house an array of statues that showcase the talent of local and regional artists. Among these are the 18th-century statues of Saint Joseph and Our Lady of Sorrows by San Severo artist Sebastiano Marrocco, alongside 19th-century works of the Immaculate Conception, Saint Philip Benizi, and the Guardian Angel by Neapolitan sculptor Giuseppe Catello.

Each chapel offers a glimpse into the artistic and spiritual devotion of past centuries, making them a must-see for visitors exploring the church.

Restoration and Legacy

After suffering damage in the 2002 earthquake, Santa Maria della Pietà underwent extensive restoration and was reopened on April 2, 2009. Today, it stands proudly as a grange of San Severino and continues to serve as the seat of the Arciconfraternita dell'Orazione e Morte di N.S.G.C.

In conclusion, a visit to Santa Maria della Pietà is a journey through time, offering a captivating blend of history, art, and spirituality. Whether you are an art lover, a history enthusiast, or a spiritual seeker, this Baroque masterpiece in San Severo promises an unforgettable experience that resonates with the soul.
