In 2001, a controversy arose when the former owners removed the heraldic shield from the farmhouse's façade. Thanks to the efforts of the local association Dones del Futur and architect Joan Bassegoda, the shield was reinstated in 2003. This event spurred the then-mayor, Jesús Maria Canga, to express the municipality's intention to acquire the property. Finally, in 2005, the Sant Adrià de Besòs City Council purchased Can Rigalt for 1.1 million euros, with plans to repurpose it for cultural uses.

The shield is crowned with a helmet adorned with feathers and surrounded by leaves, indicating the noble status of the farmhouse's former owners. Although the house is associated with the Rigalt family, the shield is identified as belonging to the Gerona family, who had familial ties with the Rigalts since the mid-18th century.
After the City Council acquired Can Rigalt in 2005, plans for its rehabilitation were put on hold until 2007. However, it wasn't until 2015 that the restoration work finally commenced. The restoration efforts focused on replacing the old roofs while preserving as many of the original tiles as possible, repairing deteriorated beams, and reinforcing a load-bearing wall on the upper floor. Additionally, the old water tanks on the roof were removed, and a new, larger-capacity tank was installed on the ground floor.
