San Giacomo

San Giacomo Sassari

San Giacomo

Nestled in the heart of Sassari, the San Giacomo Church, known locally as Chiesa di San Giacomo, is a hidden gem that offers visitors a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Sardinian history and architecture. This charming church, with its storied past and serene atmosphere, stands proudly amidst the bustling city, inviting travelers to step back in time and explore its sacred halls.

The History of San Giacomo

San Giacomo's history stretches back to the 13th century, evidenced by an ancient inscription discovered during renovations in the early 20th century. This inscription, now housed in the Sanna Museum, marks the church's origin in 1269, during the time of Don Pietro Fata. Originally dedicated to the Holy Sepulchre, the church served as an oratory for the clergy of Sassari.

In the mid-16th century, the church underwent significant changes. The Canonici, who had lived a communal life, left the church, which was then handed over to the Arciconfraternita dell'Orazione e Morte. This brotherhood, known for its charitable works and noble membership, reconstructed the church between 1600 and 1603, dedicating it to their patron, Saint James (San Giacomo). Despite a setback when the newly built structure collapsed, the city rallied to support its reconstruction with a generous donation of 200 ducats.

Architectural Highlights

The approach to San Giacomo is nothing short of enchanting. The entrance gate, adorned with the symbols of the Confraternity—a skull and crossbones, an hourglass, and a cross—sets the stage for the church's unique character. As you pass through the archway, you are greeted by a courtyard that offers a serene respite from the city's hustle and bustle.

The church's façade is understated yet elegant, featuring a simple gabled design framed by pilasters. A prominent window and a sturdy archway above the main door add a touch of grandeur. Adjacent to the church is the Rector's House, a classicist structure from the mid-19th century, adding to the historical ambiance of the site.

Inside San Giacomo

Step inside San Giacomo, and you'll find a rectangular nave with a barrel-vaulted ceiling that leads to a Gothic-style apse. The Capilla Mayor, with its ribbed cross vault, is a masterpiece of medieval design. Above the entrance to the apse, the coat of arms of Pope Pius X, flanked by angels, adds a touch of celestial majesty.

The church's interior is adorned with four large niches, each serving as a chapel. The first chapel on the left is dedicated to the Crucifix and features a stunning baroque wooden altar crafted by local artist Antonio Usai in 1762. The altar, along with a crucifix dating from the 16th or 17th century, was relocated from the now-demolished Church of Santa Elisabetta.

On the right, the Chapel of Saint Maurice houses another exquisite baroque altar, complete with a polychrome wooden sculpture of Saint Maurice on horseback. This 18th-century piece is flanked by silver-painted statues of Saints Proto and Gianuario, offering a glimpse into the church's rich artistic heritage.

Artistic Treasures

San Giacomo is not only a place of worship but also a treasure trove of art. The church proudly displays two processional banners, one of which dates back to 1826 and bears the signature of Gaetano Basso. Additionally, a gilded wooden throne for the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, likely of Venetian or Austrian origin from the late 18th century, adds to the church's artistic allure.
