The earliest known document referencing the church dates to 975, marking the donation of the chapel to the Benedictine monastery of Saints Felix and Fortunatus in Vicenza. Initially a modest chapel, possibly built on the ruins of a Lombard watchtower, it evolved over centuries into the grand structure we see today.

In the 12th century, the church became a permanent home for the archpriest of the Pieve, although significant religious ceremonies like Easter baptisms were still conducted at the ancient church of Santa Maria di Belvicino. By 1453, the Duomo had firmly established its status as the main church of the area, and it underwent several reconstructions, reaching its current form through efforts spanning from 1747 to 1879.

Architectural Splendor and Neoclassical Elegance

The Duomo’s present neoclassical appearance is the result of numerous renovations. The 18th century saw the creation of a new central nave, designed by Giovanni Miazzi, followed by the construction of an apse and hanging sacristy by Don Domenico Cerato in 1770. The striking facade, completed between 1800 and 1820 under Antonio Diedo’s guidance, features a classical portico and a pair of bell towers.

In 1837, architect Tommaso Meduna added the imposing lateral staircases, enhancing the Duomo’s grandeur by masking the Gorzone hill with a massive stone wall. The final significant changes were made in 1879 by Antonio Caregaro Negrin, who designed the two small lateral naves and the new rectory, courtesy of Alessandro Rossi’s commission.

The left nave includes altars with statues by Valentino Zajec and paintings by Giovanni Busato and Valentino Pupin, alongside the beautifully remodeled Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament.

The Presbytery and Its Treasures

The presbytery, accessible via a grand staircase, holds the 1783 main altar, flanked by statues of Faith and Hope by Zajec. Here, a canvas by Pupin depicts The Delivery of the Keys, while the choir showcases Giovanni Busato’s 19th-century stereochromes. The apse, adorned by Tito Chini in the 1930s, features depictions of God the Father and Christ enthroned with Saints Peter and Paul.
