Morean Arts Center

Morean Arts Center St. Petersburg

Morean Arts Center

Located in the heart of St. Petersburg, Florida, the Morean Arts Center is a vibrant hub for creativity and artistic expression. This contemporary arts center showcases an impressive array of works by local, national, and international artists, making it a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.

The Rich History of the Morean Arts Center

The Morean Arts Center's roots trace back to 1917 when Margaret and Edith Tadd founded the Art Club of St. Petersburg. This mother-daughter duo aimed to honor J. Liberty Tadd, Edith’s husband and Margaret’s father, by creating a space where artists could gather, create, and appreciate art. Initially located near the kapok tree by what is now the Museum of Fine Arts, the club evolved over the decades, undergoing several transformations and relocations.

In 1972, the Art Club merged with the Art Center Association, leading to a new name, The Arts Center, and a move to 7th Street. After two decades, thanks to a generous donation from Beth Morean, the center acquired and connected multiple properties on the 700 block of Central Avenue. This expansion allowed the center to flourish and eventually become the Morean Arts Center we know today, continuing its mission to nurture and showcase artistic talent.

Exploring the Morean Arts Center

Visitors to the Morean Arts Center are greeted by a dynamic and ever-changing array of exhibitions. The center prides itself on displaying works from a diverse range of artists, including renowned names like Jasper Johns, Duncan McClellan, and Peter Max. The exhibitions are thoughtfully curated to provide a rich and engaging experience, ensuring there is always something new and exciting to discover.

The Glass Studio and Hot Shop

One of the standout features of the Morean Arts Center is the Glass Studio & Hot Shop. This facility offers a unique opportunity to witness the mesmerizing art of glassblowing firsthand. Visitors can watch skilled glass artists at work, creating stunning pieces right before their eyes. The studio also offers classes and workshops, allowing enthusiasts to try their hand at this captivating craft. The Hot Shop retail store provides an array of original glass art created by local and regional artists, making for a perfect souvenir or gift.

The Chihuly Collection

In 2010, the Morean Arts Center formed a partnership with world-renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly, leading to the creation of the Chihuly Collection. Originally located on Beach Drive, the collection moved to Central Avenue in 2016, right next to the Morean Arts Center. This stunning exhibition showcases Chihuly's breathtaking glass sculptures, offering visitors an immersive and awe-inspiring experience. The proceeds from the Chihuly Collection support the local arts community, furthering the center's mission to promote and nurture artistic talent.

The Morean Center for Clay

For those with a passion for ceramics, the Morean Center for Clay is a must-visit. Housed in the historic Seaboard Train Station, this facility is the largest pottery studio in the Southeast and the third largest in the country. The center boasts studios for 42 working artists, six Artists-in-Residence, two rotating galleries, classrooms, and a spacious event area. Visitors can tour the facility, participate in hands-on activities, and explore the retail store, which offers a variety of Chihuly merchandise. The kiln complex, featuring wood, gas, and soda kilns, is a testament to the center's dedication to the craft of ceramics.

Engaging Programs and Community Outreach

The Morean Arts Center is committed to fostering a love of art within the community through a variety of programs and classes. From adult and children's classes to family and early childhood programs, there is something for everyone. The center's primary outreach efforts focus on youth, many of whom are at risk, providing them with a creative outlet and a sense of community. Summer camps and specialized programs, such as Operation: Art of Valor for veterans, further demonstrate the center's dedication to making art accessible to all.

Operation: Art of Valor

Launched in 2018, Operation: Art of Valor is a free program for veterans, run in partnership with the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital. This initiative offers classes in glass blowing, photography, and ceramics, providing veterans with an opportunity to learn new skills, build confidence, and foster teamwork. The program is a testament to the center's commitment to using art as a means of healing and empowerment.

Memory Mornings

Memory Mornings is a special program that allows visitors and their caretakers to explore the Chihuly Collection before it opens to the public. Held once a month, this program includes a guided tour of the collection and an art activity inspired by the displayed works. It is a wonderful way for individuals to engage with art in a relaxed and supportive environment.

In conclusion, the Morean Arts Center is more than just an art gallery; it is a vibrant community hub that celebrates creativity and artistic expression. Whether you are an art aficionado or a casual visitor, the center offers a wealth of experiences that are sure to inspire and delight. From its rich history and diverse exhibitions to its engaging programs and community outreach, the Morean Arts Center is a true gem in the heart of St. Petersburg.
