Elefanten-Apotheke

Elefanten-Apotheke Steinfurt

Elefanten-Apotheke

Steinfurt, a charming town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, is home to a hidden gem that has stood the test of time—the Elefanten-Apotheke. This pharmacy, with its rich history dating back to 1575, is more than just a place to pick up prescriptions; it is a testament to centuries of medical history, architectural beauty, and the enduring spirit of a community.

A Storied Beginning

The Elefanten-Apotheke’s origins are deeply rooted in the late 16th century. On January 17, 1575, a master named Jorgen Pepper was granted citizenship in Steinfurt, and under the guidance of the count's personal physician, Arnold Holtermann, he established a pharmacy. The presence of the Hohe Schule, an institution of higher education, likely influenced this decision, as its students often required medical attention. The pharmacy quickly became an integral part of the community, serving the needs of the burgeoning student population and the local residents.

Generations of Care

Heinrich Holtermann, the son of the physician Arnold Holtermann, was trained at the Elefanten-Apotheke and later took over its operations. His dedication to the pharmacy was unwavering until his death from the plague in 1635. The pharmacy then passed to his son, Arnold Holtermann. Over the years, the Elefanten-Apotheke saw numerous changes in ownership and even faced competition from a rival pharmacy established in 1608.

A New Name and a Royal Connection

In 1714, under the ownership of Johann Heinrich Dankelmann, the pharmacy was renamed “Einhorn-Apotheke.” However, it wasn’t until the latter half of the 18th century that the pharmacy truly flourished. Conrad Gempt, who took over in 1757, became the court pharmacist and, in honor of the marriage between Count Ludwig and Duchess Juliane of Schleswig-Holstein-Glücksburg, renamed it the “Apotheke zum Elephanten.” This name change was a tribute to Count Ludwig's new title as a Knight of the Danish Order of the Elephant.

Innovation and Resilience

Conrad Gempt’s son, Johann Heinrich Gempt, continued the family tradition and made significant contributions to public health, including the promotion of smallpox vaccination. The pharmacy remained in the Gempt family until 1852 when it was sold to pharmacist Gottlieb Schröter. Under the Schröter family’s stewardship, the pharmacy underwent several transformations, including major renovations in the early 20th century by Karl Laureck, who turned it into a thriving business.

Surviving the War

The Elefanten-Apotheke faced one of its greatest challenges during World War II. On March 22, 1945, a phosphorus bomb struck, causing extensive damage. Despite the devastation, the 74-year-old Karl Laureck managed to save the historic pharmacy door and other valuable items. Although rebuilding was initially impossible due to material shortages and financial constraints, Laureck operated a makeshift pharmacy in a former tavern to continue serving the community until his death in 1947.

Rebirth and Modernization

After the war, Karl Laureck’s daughter, Hildegard Rose, and her husband, Paul Gustav Rose, undertook the task of rebuilding the Elefanten-Apotheke. They restored the pharmacy to its former glory, incorporating the salvaged historic door. Their son, Walter Rose, further modernized the pharmacy in the 1970s, adding a medical center to better serve the community's needs.

A Legacy of Excellence

Today, the Elefanten-Apotheke is under the capable leadership of Olaf Rose, Walter’s son. Olaf has expanded the pharmacy’s services, establishing a sterile laboratory to provide infusion pumps and solutions for cystic fibrosis patients. His dedication to medication management and collaboration with the German Parkinson Association has made the Elefanten-Apotheke a center of excellence in pharmaceutical care.

A Symbol of Heritage and Progress

The Elefanten-Apotheke is not just a pharmacy; it is a symbol of Steinfurt's rich heritage and a beacon of progress in medical care. The beautifully restored historic door, which was recognized as the Restoration of the Year in 1996, stands as a testament to the resilience and dedication of the generations that have kept this establishment alive. The pharmacy's commitment to innovation and community service continues to make it a cornerstone of Steinfurt.

Visiting the Elefanten-Apotheke is like stepping back in time while witnessing the forward march of medical science. It is a place where history and modernity coexist, offering a unique glimpse into the past and a hopeful vision for the future. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a medical professional, or simply a curious traveler, the Elefanten-Apotheke is a must-visit destination in Steinfurt.
