The History of St. Mary's Church

The origins of St. Mary's Church date back to 1298 when it was first mentioned in historical records. The church was modeled after St. Mary's Church in Lübeck, another prominent Gothic structure, but with several distinct features that set it apart.

St. Mary's Church is a three-nave basilica with a transept, a western pseudo-transept, an ambulatory, and a ring of chapels. The absence of flying buttresses, which are typically prominent in Gothic architecture, and the hidden buttresses under the side aisle roofs, give the structure a unique, compact appearance.

The church's west front is particularly notable for its monumental design, consisting of a central tower flanked by four smaller stair towers and two side halls. This design, resting on 14-meter-high pillars, is unparalleled in the architectural history of the time. The western façade is further embellished with limestone up to a height of 36 meters, adding to its imposing presence.

The church also withstood damage during World War II, specifically from a bombing raid in 1944. Post-war efforts saw the restoration of the windows and parts of the southern aisle roof. Extensive renovations in the early 21st century have ensured that St. Mary's Church remains a well-preserved historical monument.
