University of Trnava

In the heart of Slovakia, nestled within the charming city of Trnava, lies the prestigious University of Trnava, known in the local language as Trnavská univerzita v Trnave. This esteemed institution, with its rich history and commitment to academic excellence, is a beacon of knowledge and culture in the region.

A Glimpse into History

The University of Trnava was officially established on July 1, 1992, by the law of the Slovak National Council. However, its roots trace back to the historical Trnava University, which was founded in 1635. The modern university was brought to life as a result of the Velvet Revolution in 1989, with the idea spearheaded by historian Jozef Šimončič. The university's establishment was a collaborative effort involving city representatives and numerous local educators, as well as international support from scholars like philosopher Karl Popper.

Despite initial political challenges, including attempts by the government to control or even dissolve the university, the University of Trnava persevered. It was seen as a symbol of the post-November development in Slovak education, built on humanistic and Christian principles. The first rector, Anton Hajduk, was appointed by the then Czechoslovak president, Václav Havel, and the university was inaugurated on November 8, 1992.

Academic Excellence

The University of Trnava comprises five faculties: the Faculty of Philosophy, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Education, and the Faculty of Health and Social Work. Except for the Faculty of Theology, which is based in Bratislava, all faculties are located in Trnava. The university is a research institution, home to over 5,500 students and more than 33,000 alumni.

The university is committed to upholding Christian values, protecting moral and spiritual values, fostering ecumenism, and collaborating with educational and scientific institutions both in Slovakia and abroad. It is a co-founder of several consortia, including the U10+ Consortium of Slovak Universities, the international consortium KreativEU, and the Three Seas Universities Network. Notably, it is the only university in Slovakia to have received the highest national external award, the National Quality Award.

Architectural Marvels

The university's buildings are a blend of historical and modern architecture, reflecting its rich heritage and forward-looking vision. The main building, located on Hornopotočná Street in Trnava, has been meticulously restored to preserve its historical significance while providing state-of-the-art facilities for students and faculty. The Faculty of Law is housed in a stunning Art Nouveau building on Kollárova Street, which was renovated under the guidance of the first dean, Peter Blaho, and legal expert Jozef Prusák.

Symbolism and Identity

The university's logo is a powerful symbol of its identity and values. Designed by academic sculptor Anton Gábrik, it features the face of Christ Pantocrator, inspired by the Shroud of Turin and Russian iconography. This emblem, suggested by the first chairman of the university's academic senate, Michal Slivka, represents the university's commitment to Christian principles and its historical legacy.

Modern Achievements

In the 21st century, the University of Trnava has continued to expand its activities and strengthen its economic and scientific foundations. The university's publishing house, Typi Universitatis Tyrnaviensis, established in 2001, collaborates closely with the Slovak Academy of Sciences' publishing house, furthering academic research and publication.

According to the 7th edition of the international U-Multirank evaluation in 2020, the University of Trnava is ranked as the third-best university in Slovakia. It is highly regarded for the quality of its publications, the internationalization of its students and faculty, and its performance in specific fields such as political science, sociology, history, and educational sciences. The university's Faculty of Education, in particular, achieved the best ranking among Slovak and Czech universities in all indicators.
