Although the architect remains unknown, the names Johan Daniel Berlin and Christian Lerche have been suggested as possible designers. Despite its grandeur, Cecilie did not reside in Stiftsgården for long, eventually moving to Copenhagen where she passed away in 1786.

In 1800, the building was sold to the state and served various administrative functions, including housing the Stiftsamtmann, the highest administrative officer in the region. Stiftsgården's role as a royal residence began in 1818 during the coronation of King Karl III Johan. Since then, it has hosted numerous royal events, including coronations and state visits.

Exploring Stiftsgården

Visitors to Stiftsgården are treated to a journey through time as they explore its stunning architecture and interiors. The building, constructed at the transition from Rococo to Classicism, features a two-story main wing extending 58 meters along Munkegaten, with perpendicular side wings forming a U-shape around a courtyard and a small park. The facade is a study in symmetry, with the street running directly alongside.

Inside, Stiftsgården boasts approximately 140 rooms spread over 4,000 square meters. The ground floor features a series of reception rooms arranged in a traditional Baroque enfilade, with a central hall now serving as the Throne Room. This unique layout allows visitors to enter directly into the Throne Room from the main entrance, providing an immediate sense of grandeur.

The Royal Touch

The interiors of Stiftsgården are adorned with high double-leaf panel doors, ornate stove niches, and Rococo-style stucco ceilings. Many rooms retain original 18th-century wallpapers and wall paintings. The furnishings largely date from the 19th-century coronations and the 1906 coronation of King Haakon VII. Although much of the original decor was replaced with modern Scandinavian design in the 1950s, subsequent renovations have restored much of the historical character.

The Stiftsgårdspark

The Stiftsgårdspark, a 3,000 square meter oasis, complements the historic building. Once private, the park was opened to the public following renovations in 1996-1997. It features a circular plaza with a fountain, benches, and plantings, as well as a monument to King Olav V, making it a serene spot for reflection amid the bustling city.

A Living Monument

Today, Stiftsgården remains a cultural treasure, protected as a historic monument. While the royal family retains rights to the residence, the building is managed by Statsbygg Midt-Norge and is open to the public for guided tours when not in use by the royals.
