St. Mary's church Uelzen

St. Mary's Church Uelzen, known locally as St. Marien zu Uelzen, stands proudly in the heart of Uelzen, Niedersachsen, Germany. This magnificent Gothic structure is not just a place of worship but a testament to the rich history and architectural prowess of the region. As one of the oldest churches in the Uelzen district, it serves as a central hub for regional services and events within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover.

A Glimpse into History

The origins of St. Mary's Church Uelzen date back to the 13th century, though the exact commencement of its construction remains a mystery. The church was consecrated in 1292 by the Bishop of Verden and was elevated to the status of a parish church in the same year. Over the centuries, it has witnessed numerous historical events and transformations, reflecting the resilience and dedication of the local community.

Architectural Marvel

The church is an exemplary model of North German Brick Gothic architecture. Initially constructed as a three-nave hall church, it has undergone several modifications and expansions over time. The impressive high vaults of the central nave are believed to belong to a construction phase before 1300. The church's elevation was gradually increased to accommodate burials in the surrounding churchyard, resulting in the current structure where one descends five steps to enter the church.

The Towering Presence

The 86-meter-high tower of St. Mary's Church is a prominent feature of Uelzen's skyline. This square, minimally articulated tower was built after the completion of the High Choir. Following a devastating city fire in 1671, the tower was given a Baroque makeover. The spire, which was destroyed in a fire in 1945, was reconstructed in 1954. The narrow staircase leading to the tower's peak comprises 196 small steps, offering a challenging yet rewarding climb for those seeking panoramic views.

Intricate Interiors

Inside, the church is a treasure trove of religious art and historical artifacts. The High Choir, built in 1385, is adorned with stunning stained glass windows that depict various scenes from the life of the apostles. The pulpit, designed in a neo-Gothic style by Conrad Wilhelm Hase in 1900, stands prominently before the High Choir, adding to the church's grandeur.

Chapel of the Apostles

On the south side of the church lies the Apostelkapelle (Chapel of the Apostles), a memorial to the victims of the 1350 plague epidemic. Consecrated in 1357, this chapel contrasts with the main church through its delicate forms and colorful medieval murals. It also serves as the burial site for the Ellendorf family, earning it the nickname Ellendorfkapelle.

Chapel of the Three Kings

Adjacent to the Apostelkapelle is the Dreikönigskapelle (Chapel of the Three Kings), added almost a century later in 1430. This chapel, located on the south side of the tower, is now used for morning devotions and offers a serene space for reflection.

Artistic Treasures

The church houses several artistic and historical treasures. The Golden Ship, a symbol of Uelzen, is displayed in a wall niche near the entrance. This mysterious artifact, believed to be a medieval table ornament or reliquary, was likely brought to Uelzen during the Hanseatic era. Additionally, the Annenaltar (St. Anne's Altar), a Gothic wood carving from Lüneburg, now resides in the Apostelkapelle, having been relocated from the St. Viti Chapel in 1949.

The Majestic Organ

St. Mary's Church boasts the largest organ in the Lüneburg Heath, with 53 registers. Originally crafted by Johann Georg Stein in 1756, the organ has undergone several restorations and modifications. The most recent restoration in 2001 ensured that the organ could accommodate a wide range of musical compositions, making it a central feature of the church's musical heritage. The organ's intricate design and powerful sound continue to captivate visitors and congregants alike.

Stunning Stained Glass and Paintings

The chancel vault's paintings, uncovered and restored in 1962, depict the twelve apostles, a mercy seat, and the enthroned Christ. The vibrant stained glass windows, designed by Renate Strasser, further enhance the church's spiritual ambiance, illustrating scenes from the apostles' lives in vivid detail.
