Astronomical Observatory and Planetarium "Nicolaus Copernicus"

Nestled in the heart of Varna’s Sea Garden, the Astronomical Observatory and Planetarium Nicolaus Copernicus offers a celestial escape for curious minds and stargazers alike. Known locally as Народна астрономическа обсерватория и планетариум „Николай Коперник“, this fascinating complex invites visitors to explore the wonders of the universe while enjoying the serene beauty of its surroundings.

The Birth of an Astronomical Gem

The idea for an observatory in Varna took root in the early 1960s, driven by a burgeoning interest in astronomy and space exploration. Under the guidance of then-mayor Nikolay Boyadzhiev, a dedicated space was allocated in 1963 within the Sea Garden for the Astronomy and Astronautics Club. This marked the beginning of Varna’s journey into the cosmos, with the first courses in astronomy and rocket modeling taking place here.

By 1964, plans were underway to transform the existing structure into a state-of-the-art observatory. Architect Kamen Goranov spearheaded the project, which evolved to include a planetarium and lecture hall. Officially opened on May 22, 1968, the complex was named in honor of the renowned Polish scientist Nicolaus Copernicus, a fitting tribute to a pioneer of astronomical thought.

Exploring the Cosmos

Visitors to the Astronomical Observatory and Planetarium Nicolaus Copernicus can immerse themselves in a world of astronomical discovery. The complex features a variety of telescopes, including a refractor 80/1200 mm and a Cassegrain 150/2250 mm, providing opportunities for observing celestial bodies and phenomena.

The planetarium is equipped with a Zeiss Kleinplanetarium projector, capable of displaying up to 5,500 stars on its 10.5-meter dome. This immersive experience is enhanced by additional projectors, offering vivid illustrations of the night sky. The star hall, with its 80 seats, hosts lectures in Bulgarian, English, and Russian, making it accessible to a diverse audience.

The Foucault Pendulum

One of the standout features of the observatory is the Foucault Pendulum, housed in a tower with a 17.6-meter-long wire. This pendulum provides a tangible demonstration of Earth’s rotation, making a complete revolution of 10 degrees and 3 minutes per hour at Varna’s latitude. This mesmerizing display is a must-see for anyone interested in the mechanics of our planet.

A Hub for Education and Research

The Astronomical Observatory and Planetarium Nicolaus Copernicus serves as a vital center for education and research. It collaborates with schools to offer courses in astronomy and physics, nurturing the next generation of scientists and enthusiasts. The complex also plays a key role in organizing the National Youth Astronomical Conference, fostering a community of young astronomers.

Beyond education, the observatory engages in various research projects, utilizing both its own facilities and the equipment at the National Observatory in Rozhen and the Belogradchik Observatory. This collaborative approach ensures that Varna remains at the forefront of astronomical exploration.

Honoring Excellence in Amateur Astronomy

The observatory has established the Nikolay Petrov award, named after its long-serving director and honorary citizen of Varna. This accolade recognizes outstanding contributions to amateur astronomy, celebrating the passion and dedication of those who inspire others to look to the stars.
